I've become interested in Disgaea, but haven't started yet. I was wondering in anyone would help me decide if its in the same league as Tactics. btw, Im not asking for people to choose favorites, just gimme a low down on some sims and diffs.

Since I have never played the game you are talking about I will link to some pages that have comments on who has played both Tactics and this other game.. Here is the first one I found.

If I find anymore I will link them too.
Wow, that has got to be the worst rating I've ever seen given to that game. Everywhere else I've gone, I've read that its a RPG'ers dream.
Oh god, you don't need to level to the maximum level in any RPG do you? You most certainly don't need to level to 9,999 in any Disgaea game. Maybe if that reviewer could write a review with proper grammar I'd take him more seriously.
Edit: I don't enjoy how the reviewer seems to think FFT is the be-all standard for SRPGs either. I mean, yeah, it was a wonderful game, but all SRPGs are going to be different and shouldn't be faulted merely because they didn't 'live up to the standards of teh FFTz.' *sigh*
Disgaea is one of those games that at first, seems a little shallow compared to FFT and Tactics Ogre. Characters only gain abilities through weapons (except for the story characters, mages and monsters) and ar first class just seems to alter stats somewhat. Then you start dealing with reincarnation, item world, and Geo Panels and well... It becomes your choice if you want to dive into the "rabbit hole" and expirenece a level of depth not found in SRPGs
It's story is wonderful as well as it's cast (which has wonderful English voice acting but you can also switch it back to Japanese) If the game can be credited for anything, it's the ability to "throw" this allows you to pick up party members (and enemies) and change the setup of the field for your own amusement. It adds new depth to battles. As long as you have the patience to play an SRPG you should enjoy it. :mog:
True beauty exists in things that last only for a moment.
Current Mood: And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe. Maybe this year will be better than the last. I can't remember all the times I tried to tell myself. To hold on to these moments as they pass...
After you spend about three hours straight playing Disgaea, the heroin secretly added to the discs go through the controller and into your bloodstream. And then you won't be able to stop playing for hell or high water.
And Flonne is adorable~!
Does it have random battles? That's the only thing that stopped me from getting Suikoden Tactics and I love the Suikoden series.
Disgaea doesn't take itself very seriously, and is a pretty funny game. Furthermore, the battle system is very streamlined compared to FFTs battle system. I feel that I get more done with fewer keypresses in Disgaea than in FFT. On the other hand, FFT's storyline is much more serious and mature.
That's what I know <.<-
everything is wrapped in gray
i'm focusing on your image
can you hear me in the void?
disgaea is just fun to play. every little bit of it is fun, but FFT feels more solid and defined. the story in FFT still sticks with me today, and I haven't played it in years.
I've never heard of Disgaea, but there's this game called Final Fantasy Tactics that I strongly recommend.
I like diversity in games, but they did something amazing with FFT. I'm sure it wasn't the first SRPG done in that style, but when I played, I personally had never seen anything like it. FFT is a game that almost any video gamer would enjoy playing, just because of the way the action is conducted. It is, without any doubt or question, the greatest video game I've ever experienced.I don't enjoy how the reviewer seems to think FFT is the be-all standard for SRPGs either. I mean, yeah, it was a wonderful game, but all SRPGs are going to be different and shouldn't be faulted merely because they didn't 'live up to the standards of teh FFTz.' *sigh*
There have been a couple of games that followed a similar mold, and were totally fine. Vandal Hearts was similar to FFT in the Battle System, but that was about it. Other than that, the game had a totally different feel. And I liked Vandal Hearts just fine. BG, you may know this, but Vandal Hearts doesn't have random battles either, which makes it very troublesome for the player who likes to be one or two levels ahead of the enemy. Furthermore, VH has no moves like "Accumulate" to make the most of every AT you get. Also, the job system is VERY guided. You can only change job classes (advance) twice in the whole game, once at level 10 and once again at level 20. And you only get a choice at level 10. Like a Mage can choose to be an Enchanter or Monk, and then at 20, Enchanters become Sorcerers and Monks become Ninjas.
However, VH does have one thing that FFT does not. When you kill an creature, their blood sprays way high into the air as they depart from the battlefield.
However, with Suikoden Tactics, it seemed like they were trying to hard to put a FFT formula around their story. They added some new weird stuff like adding elemental charge to the ground with magic, and a lot of other different battle dynamics, Suikoden Tactics was playable, but did meet my expectations of an SRPG.
I guess I shouldn't have played FFT as my first SRPG. Now I've got this skewed perception and I expect all SPRGs to be... well... good.
Anyway, I will have to try Disgaea. What system is it available for?

Both Disgaea titles are for the PlayStation 2. However, the first game is quite rare...one of the few PS2 titles to be hard to find under $100. You can easily find Disgaea 2 however, as it was released relatively recently, and knowledge of the first Disgaea's storyline is unecessary.
You know what? I am not capable of making a short, concise post. I always write 4 paragraphs to make a simple point or two.
Well, this post is awfully short, so I guess I am capable of it. So long as I"m concious of what I'm doing and I think on it as I'm....
See where I'm goin? Now I'm inclined to spend 2 paragraphs explaining what I mean.
Done with this post, be back for a different one.
Both games are wonderful, but for very different reasons. Tactics, for example, has a great but serious storyline. Disgaea has a great but extremely silly storyline. Both games play out differently, but you can have a lot of fun mastering them, as they both have their own complexities.
I highly recommend both, they are both on my list of games I think everyone should play.
