I would probably go play video games or have sex (the usual) - Nominus Experse
my mom would be like "ve? yo te dije, el internet no es bueno."
"seriously, my mom tells me "que tu hase en eso el dia entero?" and im like "mami yo toy hablando con people" xD. spanglish, ftw." ~ liz
www.pandora.com is about the best (legal) alternative I can offer at the moment.
Midi files in themselves don't even have audio. It's just a bunch of code that triggers a poorly made sound module in your computer.
If you want some remixes of video game songs, that are actually very very good instrumentals. There's OCRemix.
I can't really think of where else to find stuff to download. But there are some extremely awesome native american tribal, traditional chinese, classical, celtic, malaysian, etc. type albums around. Just go look in world music sections at your music store.

I think midis are a good way to get instrumental songs. Midi files sound great, at least for me. Then again, I have an SB Live sound card that uses almost 120 MB of RAM for midis, so that gives you a pretty good sound quality.I once had one of my friends listen to my midi files, and she could hardly believe the oboe and flute solos were played by synthesized midi instruments, not real instruments.
If you can't stand the midi quality, just use some midi editing program to make sheet music out of the different midi tracks in the song, and then play those parts yourself.![]()

"One-Winged Angel" is far and away the best final boss song ever

Well, even with that kind of soundcard, I doubt they'd sound anything like the real thing. The only way you could get them to sound exactly like the real thing is to use an extremely good (yet expensive) sound library while making the song with midi code, and mix down to AIFF and WAV (and MP3 if you want to share it over the internet).
I actually downloaded one of the lower quality models of the symphonic orchestra from East West QL. (You can see a sample I made in Writers Corner; Interupted by Fireworks, or check out this quick sample I made for the quality here).
But if you look here, here, here and here.
You can see some extremely awesome, real sounding songs that were made specifically with each pack. I'm currently trying to download the RA one, but it's 15GB's. The others are around 40GB's and I don't even have that much space left on my computer. ,_,
I know Nik0tine was incredibly impressed, especially with the chior pack where you can actually type words for them to sing, and get that quality.
Note: If you're a real composer/music enthusiest, you'll check out those links.

A midi's quality really depends on the synthesizer used, of course the default microsoft synthesizer is pretty standard so most midi's will sound low quality but when it comes to precision of pitch and volume, you cant get past a midi, except that there is rarely expression.
Kefka's coming, look intimidating!
