i saved the game, bought it, looked at it, liked it but so far i haven't seen any really great loot from the wolves in the estersand. are wolves beasts?

But you can check at the Clan-Primer > Bestiary > Wolves.
Below there are informations your needed.

By having those Grimoire in your inventory do improve the drop rate of the loot.
Common Loot becomes even common.
Rare Loot have higher percentage to drop.

Does anyone know how to get the rest of the Monographs?

You have to visit weapon/armour shops, and visit the Hunt Board a certain amount of times for more to become available to you. Like for the Grimoire for 19,000, you have to visit a weapon's shop thirty times.
