You don't have to, Tomaj counts you as having talked to him about it while he explains how the whole hunting thing works.

And yeah, just leave Rabanastre by the east gate, into the Estersand. There should be a small plateua pretty much straight ahead of you - go onto it. Also bear in mind on the minimap marks appear as larger dots than normal monsters.
