Default The New Kid needs to hear some New Music

I'm trying to broaden my musical horizons, and I'd like anyone out there to help me in my quest to find the best gateway artists of the following genres:

    Jazz
    Blues
    Hip-Hop
    Ambient
    Reggae
    Indie
    Techno
    World

If you wish to add anything to that list, feel free, I want to hear LOTS of different music.

I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

If you like Jazz and Hip Hop, Nujabes is the guy for you.

Hip Hop - Roots Manuva, Sway, Klashnekoff and Black Twang.

    Just a few.

As with Nujabes, yawn. Japanese Hip Hop is never really that good.

She got signed to Def Jam, so yeah.

She's been featured pretty heavily in mobile phone commercials lately. I'd heard of her before that somewhere and was interested. I can imagine her getting booed by a crowd of chavs that actually take the culture seriously - part of what I love about her music is the fact that she's having fun and being self-deprecating in talking about all this stuff rather than trying to come off as being hard.

Yup. She has also been number one on the TRL chart. As far as I remember she was the first English artist to ever do so... so, that's pretty impressive.

Anyway, listen to some M.I.A. ... she's somewhat similar to Lady Sovereign when it comes to their sound - she's just better in my opinion

Yes, I'm a fan of Alexisonfire and City And Colour already. Please note the list of genres I would like to find out more about in my first post. Thanks.

I downloaded some Nujabes and I actually really like it. MC Frontalot was most humourous, and NWA was awesome.

Thanks for the recommendations so far, but keep in mind I'd like to hear more than just Hip-Hop/Rap. Again, consult the list above. Cheers.

Yes. And don't listen to Dreddz. He makes beautiful beats mixed with Jazz, so check him out.

    Indie-wise:
    Animal Collective
    The Arctic Monkeys
    Belle And Sebastion
    Bright Eyes
    Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
    Death Cab For Cutie
    The Decemberists
    Fiery Furnaces
    Franz Ferdinand
    The Futureheads
Jet (technically garage, but Indie and Garage rock are pretty much the same)
    Modest Mouse
    Of Montreal
    The Postal Service
    The Smiths
    The Strokes (Garage)
    Ugly Casanova
The White Stripes (Garage, but I'm sure you're familiar with this band)
    Wolf Parade
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Garage?)

Nujabes is awesome, I don't really care what anyone has to say.

Techno and such, the obvious pick is Daft Punk and another choice would be Scooter, maybe. Also check out Freezepop, though they're more of the synthpop variety.
