There are over 7,900 PS1 titles and over 8,100 PS2 titles. That's a total of 16,000 games. Of those, 100-200 have reported bugs - keep in mind that could be even the smallest of bugs - and those bugs are being worked on and for all I know, that news story I linked in my last post means that some of these have already been corrected. Let's assume that they haven't been corrected - not a single one of them - in the latest firmware update for PS3 though. And we'll also say that a full 200 games have bugs, despite it being somewhere under 200 (between 100 and 200). That would mean 200 out of 16,000 games have the slightest of bugs. That's 1.25% - a small percentage as far as I'm concerned. And it's more than likely that at least 50 of them are still playable and another 50 were corrected in the last firmware update. Closer to 0.625%, then. Seriously, man. If you think that "only" having 15,800 of the previous generation games is 'not backwards compatible' then you're supplying incorrect information, because over 98% of the time, the games will work just fine. Probably closer to 99%.
Clearly, enough people can afford the PS3 so far, every one of them is sold out!
The same thing happened to the Sega Saturn and the 3DOC when they launched. Most of the people who bought the PS3 so far are either rich kids or gamers in their 20's who have jobs. When the PS3 starts to become avalible and kids and teenagers (who make up a big part of the market mind you) cant afford them and their parents arnt willing to buy it for them then the sales will begin to slip. I remember just how much hype there was for the Saturn before and during launch but then as the time passed it just died. The same thing that killed Sega is going to kill Sony in the gaming market.
You won't know this is going to happen until it happens. So far, it's far, far, far too early to say how big a price decrease will be and also far too early to say which it will follow - Sega Saturn or Sony PS2. The argument that it is doing just as well as Sega Saturn did is a poor one, and the argument that it is doing just as well as Sony PS2 did is also a poor one. They both negate each other. All it tells us is that we don't know what will happen until roughly half a year after it launches.
When those who can afford it for 600 all have it, the price will drop.
And how long will that be? It took Sony about two years to drop the price of their PS2.
So? Still sold more than any other console in history.
Furthermore, backwards compatibility is far from the most important thing with the PS3. I already have 3 machines that can play my PS1 games, and 1 that can play my PS2 games.
I disagree, imagine how pissed off anyone here would be if they sold their PS2 and PS1 and bought a PS3 and then tried to play FFVII on it and then it doesnt work? I'd get pissed if I spent $600 on something that isnt backwards capable.
Then it's your own damned fault for selling your PS2 before buying a PS3. That's just a stupid thing to do, plain and simple. Logic says that you find out if your games work on the new console before you sell the old one. Furthermore, it's notable that the PS2 isn't any more backwards compatible than the PS3 is, and the PS2 was massively successful. However, newer versions of the PS2, notably the slimline one, appear to play a lot of them fine - this shows that Sony worked to get more PS1 games to work on the PS2 over the years. Sony will probably continue to keep this in their mind and do the same for the PS3. The difference? Firmware updates mean you don't need to buy the whole console all over again!

I'm having trouble figuring out if you're just a troll or not.

Great so that number makes up almost every PS2 game.

Sonys spokesman himself said that 8,000 games were malfunctioning and didnt even mention if they were going to fix them or not.

So? Still sold more than any other console in history.
So what? My point is that a price decrease wont be coming around soon and even if it did it would still be around $400 for a 60GB.

Then it's your own damned fault for selling your PS2 before buying a PS3. That's just a stupid thing to do, plain and simple. Logic says that you find out if your games work on the new console before you sell the old one.
If the manufacture claims that the PS3 is backwards compatible then I like any other consumer am going to take their word for it. How is it my falt if the manufacture told me the system could do something and then ends up not being capable of peforming what they claim it could.

Furthermore, it's notable that the PS2 isn't any more backwards compatible than the PS3 is,

Wrong again the PS2 had no problems playing PS1 games I never had a problem with any PS1 game on the PS2 and I never heard anyone complaining about problems with PS1 games on the PS2. It was fully backwards compatible from my and many other peoples experience with it.

Sony will probably continue to keep this in their mind and do the same for the PS3. The difference? Firmware updates mean you don't need to buy the whole console all over again!
Who knows or maybe they'll just cheap out and ignore the problem. Considering its blue ray it might be hard to play other CDs on it in the first place.

    Did you read?

But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all.
From that article and this article http://articles.news.aol.com/busines...00010000000001 .

    Some info for BlackChocobo...
A handful of PlayStation titles (notably Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions) fail to run on the PS2 at all (Special Missions fails to recognise Metal Gear Solid at the disk swap screen, for example). This problem appears to have been rectified in the slimline versions of the PS2, where most of the previously unplayable PS one games can now be played.
Sony stated every PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game that observes its respective system's TRC (Technical Requirements Checklist) will be playable on PS3 at launch. SCE president Ken Kutaragi asked developers to adhere to the TRC to facilitate compatibility with future PlayStations, stating that the company was having some difficulty getting backward compatibility with games that had not followed the TRCs. It has been confirmed (image) that initial PS3 units will include the CPU/rasterizer combination chip used in slim PS2 (EE+GS) to achieve backward compatibility.[51] Two days after the release of the PlayStation 3 in Japan, Sony announced that some titles had big problems, mostly with sound playback.[52] It has also been reported that some scenes from the Gran Turismo racing game might freeze, the game Suikoden III cannot read data from a first-generation PlayStation, and a virtual gun in one of the Biohazard games will not fire properly.[53] Most of the 7841 titles in Sony's database work; future firmware updates will provide more compatibility. As of November 16, an online firmware upgrade has been posted by Sony that is intended to address some of these issues.[54] PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software will still be limited by region-locking and will not be enhanced or upscaled.[citation needed]

The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation devices, though IGN.com tested a legacy controller using a PS2-to-USB adapter, finding that it is compatible, though most other devices (such as the Guitar Hero controller) may not be compatible [55]. USB devices for PlayStation 2 may be compatible with PlayStation 3. A memory card adapter is available[1] so users can save their PS1/PS2 data[56] on to a virtual memory card in the hard drive. PlayStation 3 can use Memory Sticks to store save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.[57]
    Both from Wikipedia.
