By most accounts--and in my experience--he only casts Renew on himself twice, and after that, you can kill him unimpeded. But Spuuky tells me that, in his case, the King actually cast it nine times and showed no sign of stopping, so the only solution was to resort to Quickenings.

Yeah, Kawaii's got it. He'll rejuventate himself a bunch of times if you're not quick enough to finish him off when he hovers close to 50% HP remaining. I got a friend of mine whose stuck at this part fo the game and has been for the last 5 days. master a few quickenings and pray for a great chain; you'll be good to go.

Just remember, this is an optional boss so you can get to the Nabreus deadlands and the necrohol of Nabudis. You can continue the story without killing it if you can't beat it yet.
On a sidenote, you can steal from him, leave the area, come back and steal again, and so on. Nice if you're tight on gil.

Also nice if he drops the rare Bomb fragments which sell for close to 900 gil each I think; maybe even 1,000.

As for the optional part, what's the other way around him? Isn't he blocking your path to move on out of the woods the first tiem you encounter him? There's only one way forward if I remember correctly.

He's only blocking the way to Nabreus and Nabudis, which is northwest. Phon Coast, the next storyline location, is East

And you have to beat him to get Chaos, so I reccomend doing it.

I was around lvl 45 when I fought him. He renewed twice and then I finish him off with a 8 hit quicky while he had 20-30% health.

I beat him with one 15-chain quickening at level 37-38.

However, I knew you could steal from him, so I reset to test that out. With the thief's cuffs equipped to Vaan, I could steal bomb shells about 97% of the time, which sell for about 900 gil. Then you can exit the screen (which is right behind you if you just waited for the King Bomb to come to you) and reenter, and do it all again. And there's a teleport crystal right there for healing when needed. I did this 50 times, and I once also got the rare bomb fragments, which sells for almost 2000 gil. This didn't take me long at all, but it got boring, so I stopped at 50. But it nets about 45k, which is more than I've ever made at one time so far in this game (which was like 25k, maybe).

one you've killed all of the small bombs use silence on the king bomb -- he'll be unable to call the small bombs back, though he will continue to recharge his health. This makes things a bit easier.
