It helps, well for me at least, to try and not take my own opinions as the be all and end all. That way, if an argument does brew, I don't feel like it's a personal attack and thus, can detach myself somewhat to keep from flying off the cuff in a manner of speaking. Though I should note that it's easier to be civil when you can type your words and measure them, edit them, etc, as opposed to having a debate with someone in the flesh and blood when you react much more quickly and personally. If off the computer debates counted here, I'd have my share of bans too, you can be sure of that.
