Why do they think VIiI is so terrible?
Yellow Winged Angel
Who cares?
I, an FFVIII fangirl, am mad.
I don't think that article is nearly as critical as some of this board's members! =P
This just proves the whole polarizing effect that this game had. Seems everybody thinks it's a piece of delicious or a piece of crap.
Ah well, games get articles in their favor, and then years later they get articles in the negative. It simply happens. Gaming culture is a confusing one to me.
Usually it's the opposite. People feel special when they can say they like the older one's better and everyone that thinks different is a graphics whore.
1UP are just plain bastards. IGN is too kind and Gamespot is more realistic.
Yeah. Who cares? They are talkin crap of course.
IGN is best. Most of the time, Gamespot makes comments about a game that doesnt even affect me in the slightest.1UP are just plain bastards. IGN is too kind and Gamespot is more realistic.
That's just someone's opinion. My opinion is it's the greatest game ever invented.
Str8 Pimpin'
People on forums and articles on websites are generally opposite about this whole thing.
Gamespy did a similar article. Metal Gear Solid 2 was raved as the best game ever by them, and then years later they made a whole article about how awful it is. It's just the way they do things.
1UP can die in a hole for all i carejust because they're too lazy to stock up magic or too immature to play the game doesn't mean it's bad
it still sold well so they can just shut up.
what makes squall a worse character than cloud when they're both quiet and cold? the article writers are a bunch of FF7 fanboys from the sound of it:rolleyes2
My thoughts exactly. I thought they went pretty easy on FFVIII. It completely lacked any explanation detailing why their complaints were valid. Hardly a thorough analysis of the game, though I don't suspect that's what the article was intended to do.
I know back in the day I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VIII, and, to an extent, I still do. I think part of the reason people will hail a game when it comes out and then tear it down years later, is because other titles have come along to improve on all the faults of the game. Of course, there's titles before it that have done the same, but once the game loses its shiny new feeling, it's easier to look at it in retrospect and say "Well damn, [insert faults of the game here] really sucked." I know that's how it is with me and FFVIII. Now that I've played many more games, I can recognize FFVIII's faults that I couldn't before.
Edit:
Saying both Cloud and Squall are quiet and cold is oversimplifying. Don't mistake this as a defense for Cloud, as I don't particularly care for him either, but Squall's attitude was flat out childish and annoying. There was a significant amount of whiny brat added to his personality to accompany the apathetic facade.
They used the same complaint that I've heard over and over and never really understood...
"It was too different - and too confusing - for most people, who ended up relying on the overpowered Summon monsters, which had overly long, unskippable cut scenes."
The system in FFVIII was tricky, but rewarding. If you can't use it well you have the easier option of using summoning, but that takes longer as a result. What do people who complain about this want? Extremely cheap and powerful summons that can be used quickly so as to completely undermine any point to actually developing skill? Or would they have preferred no summons and just the complex junction system so that beginners were forced to try and use it?
I say what I think. If you disagree, then that is up to you.
I did this, maybe twice. 90% of my magic was aquired through GF refining or Draw Points. AND I used my junctioned magic because I always had so much. The Draw system in FF8 dragged the game to a standstill. Spending ten minutes per battle just to stock up on magic is not fun, says Perriwinkle Pollywog.
