Does it have anything to do with the Deep Sea Research Center (DSRC not being the answer itself)? It's mostly located under the sea, and I suppose the flashing of the blue light which you have to watch in the first room could be interpreted as "ripples".

Hmm, Oilboyle? I'm not sure if they cause ripples before "pouncing up" from the oil, but I think they might. Also, they're more of the "crawling" type that you mention.
