I see a lot of people not really liking Blue Fields, and I agree that the original is quite dull. But when you listen to the orchestrated version and the piano version, it's quite a good song -- very relaxing.
I think for me, it's the same for the majority of FF8's OST. It wasn't that great, but when you listen to all the other versions, that's when it really kicks off.
I think with a lot of his in-game music, a lot of good ideas and well thought out compositions were made -- but just the way it was implemented and created really wasn't too great. But when you look into why he's done something, or where he's got the influence from, they can be quite interesting. And in order to hear a lot of that you really need to listen to the arranged/orchestrated versions, or even the piano versions.
I really hope one day there's a classical guitar album released for some of the classical guitar pieces you can hear throughout the games that were pretty much ruined by the midi sound module technology back in those days.
