I used to rename my characters only during my very very first plays, when I had first gotten a PSX (which I bought from my friend and which he sold with all of his games, including FF7), before I even had a memory card and before I even knew how to get past the guard scorpion. I named Cloud "Deathlord" and Barret "Sh**head" the first time, and the next time I named them "I am GAY" and "I am GAY 2." (Which made it extremely funny when Barret said, "I am GAY, you set the bomb.")

Other that that, the only time I've ever renamed a character was during my most recent playthough, where I changed "Aeris" to "Aerith," because Square has retconned that to have been her official name, and I did it for continuity's sake. This was when I had just bought DOC, when I was speed-replaying FF7 with Gameshark codes, after which I rewatched AC and then got into DOC. Although it was kind of moot because Aerith's name is never mentioned in AC or DOC.

I started a new file last Thursday, and renamed them as follows:

Cloud: Shut up(it does make for LOADS of funny lines)
Barret: Mr.T(due to popular demand)
Tifa: Big tits(after looking at all the names on her boobs)
Aeris: Anal sex(I regret it now)
Red XIII: Nanaki(if you bring him to the fight against Palmer, when you introduce yourself to Shera, he will say "I'm Nanaki, otrherwise known as Nanaki.")
Yuffie: Ninja gal(obvious)
Cait Sith: Cat idiot(couldn't think of a better name)
Vincent: Emo guy(dunno if this is right though, maybe I should go for 'Goth' instead.)
Cid: Bad mouth($%#%@#%@$#%)

omg me too! Then I name the rest after whomever I'm friends with or what school I'm going too, as that's changed the last 8 years. I always name Tifa and Aeris after girls I like, Tifa after the girl I like the most, and Aeris after the girl I used to like the most last.

I think it's best to stay with the original names of your party members, it makes for a better story line. But once my brother named Red XIII(Nanaki) Scooby Doo LOL.

In my latest game, I tried to make it more interesting by naming my characters this:
Cloud= Zack
Tifa= Jessie
Barret= Dyne
Aeris= Ifalna
Red XIII= Seto
Yuffie= Priscilla (couldn't think of anything else)
Vincent= Hojo
Cid= Rufus

I used to name all my characters after RL friends. But I really don't that anymore with any RPGs I play.

Barret = Chris (Yes, Chris is actually Black)
Aeris = Haley
Red XIII = I didn't change his name
Yuffie = Don't believe I named her either
Cait Sith = Moogle (Dunno why)
Vincent = David (My buddy looks almost EXACTLY like him... or atleast he did)
Cid = Omar (They look nothing alike. )
