I didn't but I know one guy who named characters based off of people he knew. I know another guy who kept all characters the same except for Barret who he named, "Assmunch"

The only Final Fantasy names I change are in VI (I use lowercase letters) and IX (I call Garnet by her real name.)

I only ever name them on the PC version, as I can open the save in JENOVA and change them back when they begin to piss me off. Also I sometimes shorten Red XIII to just Red, or name him Nanaki to make the Cosmo Canyon dialogue extra-retarded.

Other than that, Roto13's thing about FF6' names apply; I also change the spelling of Cyan to Kayen, but the plot kind of required Garnet to change her name...
