Default WII HAX ("Sensor bar? We don't need no stinkin' sensor bar")

I was actually following the development of this (since the discovery that all the Sensor Bar does is emit UV rays), and saw the first video of someone using candles to replace the sensor bar a few days ago.

Joystiq took the opportunity to test it out themselves, and even blow out the candles to prove it. Pretty cool. Of course Nintendo won't condone doing this since it's a big ol' fire hazard depending on the state of your gaming area, but it's good to know this works. Perhaps when people were having issues with the Wii Pointer previously, it was because of the UV rays from the sun screwing around with it.

One thing is that the candles are not connected to the system (essentially, a wireless 'sensor bar'). Though the cable on the sensor bar is pretty long, some people with huger screens may not be able to fit it in an ideal position. Other than that, it's one less wire to worry about. It does have its uses, though it's not exactly something everyone would/should do.

And this is all in the spirit of 'tinkering'. If you've never 'tinkered' with anything before, your interest in this would be pretty low.

I thought it was pretty neat when I read about it on Joystiq. To think what we would assume to be a complex piece of equipment could be replicated by something as simple as a candle.

I know nothing about UV rays, but if a flashlight emits them, wouldn't that work as a sensor bar too?

Yeah. I've heard about this, the remotes, and also people have built their own buying their own LED light things. Pretty remarkable really.
