I use my own server space. I don't see ads. I have unlimited space. (Well only 35GB on my server.) I don't have a maximum email size. I have unlimited different email addresses at my domain. I have POP3 and IMAP. I can use many kinds of webmail interfaces. I can run spamassassin or any other filtering tool I need. I don't have to worry about my host changing something in a bad way, because I am the host.
The nice thing about having your own domain is you can forward all email to your domain to a single email address. So you can just make crap up. "blarg@mydomain.net" or "amazon_com_dont_spam_me@mydomain.net" etc. and it all comes to you. Then you can give everyone a different email address. And if that address starts being spammed, you know who did it.
Only bad thing is you have to pay for a host.

i have several of them, mostly with hotmail. all i ever use is my main hotmail account, and one provided by AIM.
Yahoo, Hotmail and Snail Mail.

I use my work email account for work, my uni email account for university stuff and my domain for personal use. I get a free domain because I work for my ISP, which is cool.
I get stuff like xanga subscriptions through my hotmail, spam subscriptions through my gmail (also stu's mom emails me through this) and for general usage I use my ISP account, but its spam filters are suck, so I try not to whore it out.
I forget I have an AOL or Y!M mail account until for some reason I get an email at one of them an dtrillian pops up all cheerful "LOL YOU GOT MAILZ"

I have two emails with my ISP and one hotmail - which I only have for MSN usage.
