Using this as my reference.
First, you need to let your hair grow out. But not just randomly (like a punk rock star or wannabee), because that wouldn't work.
Also this will look ugly on a real person. Just so you know.
Squall may or may not have sideburns. The long hair on the right hand side of his head in the reference shot can be grown out. You will have to gel it.
The top of his head you can probably get by layering your hair. Did I mention this won't look very nice?
Just let the back grow out.
For the styling, although 100% of Square/Enix male stars have free flowing hair, you won't get the look without a bunch of gel. I suggest Jolco Ice gel because it's water resistent :D
Post an update in 6-10 months when your hair grows that long.

I think FF hair styles are far from the ordinary. Impossible in real life to imitate without gel.
I think that is the closest you can make it.
Gel will make it too heavy. I think for Squall all you really need is some hairspray.
Dax is like the worst product around for your hair... EVAR! I only tried it once and never went back :PAlso, you should use Dax Wave & Groom. It hold's your hair strongly to the extreme, so you should be able to create whatever style you desire from using it.
Anyway, I don't think it's possible to get a hairstyle that is comepletely like Squall's, but I guess you could get something at least somewhat similar.. like in the picture Magus of Zeal posted.
Pull out your copy of FFVIII. Beat the game. When the credits roll, locate the name of the hairstylist and contact them for exclusive information.
If that doesn't work, gel the bad mother.
I personally believe that Squall's hair makes him look like a complete tit.

I think hair mousse would work too. That's what some Japanese people use to make their hair "stand up".
