Yeah, the 3rd game is meant to be Earth's last stand, and he's been fighting for a considerable amount of time against an overwhelming force with no real respite. If you've seen the original Halo 3 trailer, you'll notice his armor looks considerably more battle-scarred than it ever had up to that point. And he's even more beat up in this one, although, given that it's the middle of a battlefield instead of out in a barren wasteland, that's not so surprising. I can't remember if Bungie has mentioned if the character model will actually take damage, but it would definitely be cool if they implemented that.
