It's perfectly fine as a standalone game, and is not really a direct sequel or prequel to anything. Knowing how it relates to Ico adds to the story, though.
Technically it's a prequel, but you won't know it's a prequel until the very end of the game, so it might as well be a stand alone game. And it's not a direct prequel, it happen like WAY before Ico does. It's one of those same world/different time prequels.

What do you think of Shadow of the Collosus?
I think it's a visually stunning game. And I like how the collosi weren't evil, just a blockade. And when I defeated one, I felt like I had destroyed a vibrant bieng, and a touch of sorrow. It was an incredible game.
