I still fail to see how the amount of people profiting from it has anything to do with the legality of it. Sounds like massive capitalist lobbying to me.

I live in Norway, and it's perfectly legal to sell your body here. However, organized prostitution (read: brothels) is illegal. I think prostitutes would benefit from working legally and organized. They would be safer if they were in a building where people could help them in case some of the customers started doing stuff he or she shouldn't.
