My thoughts exactly. I thought they went pretty easy on FFVIII. It completely lacked any explanation detailing why their complaints were valid. Hardly a thorough analysis of the game, though I don't suspect that's what the article was intended to do.
I know back in the day I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VIII, and, to an extent, I still do. I think part of the reason people will hail a game when it comes out and then tear it down years later, is because other titles have come along to improve on all the faults of the game. Of course, there's titles before it that have done the same, but once the game loses its shiny new feeling, it's easier to look at it in retrospect and say "Well damn, [insert faults of the game here] really sucked." I know that's how it is with me and FFVIII. Now that I've played many more games, I can recognize FFVIII's faults that I couldn't before.
Edit:
Saying both Cloud and Squall are quiet and cold is oversimplifying. Don't mistake this as a defense for Cloud, as I don't particularly care for him either, but Squall's attitude was flat out childish and annoying. There was a significant amount of whiny brat added to his personality to accompany the apathetic facade.
