You only need 7, and here are the locations as I remember them:
1. Finish the 100 Acre Wood
2. Finish Atlantica
3. Complete the Goddess of Fate Cup at the Underdrome
4. A chest in the World that Never Was (Brink of Despair)
5. A chest in Space Paranoids (Mesa Central Computer)
6. A chest in Twilight Town (Sunset Terrace)
7. A chest in the Crystal fissure at Radiant Garden
You need to use an Energy Crystal to create Ultima Weapon, as they are the only Orichalcum+s' in the whole game.

You get the one you didn't mention by getting at least one of every single synthesis item.
I just used the Ultima weapon to beat Sephiroth xD

All I remember was you needed an energy (gem, shard, crystal, one of them) to half the amount of materials you need for it.
no, you actually need all the materials there is to half the amount of Oricahlum + needed.

no its an item and when you use it the quantity of certain things needed will halve.

Actually you need to reach a certain rank in Synthesis, so that it can make sure that materials can be halved by it's original amount.
