how do you use a staff to cast a spell for free? I have a staff that cast's cura, but how do I make it do it for free?

I think you just use it as an item in battle?

You go down to item, and select the item to use in battle. Since the floating continent I've had a fire, ice, and light rod, and my white mage and black mage use them to attack every round. It saves MP, and makes the white mage a good damage dealer. The weapon cannot be equipped. Only magic users can use magic casting items, and two magic users can use one item in the same round.

I'm pretty sure that the class has to be able to equip the weapon for them to be able to use it as an item, but they don't have to equip the weapon. In the DS version, using the Salamand Sword as an item casts fire, but my mages can't use it. My Warrior can, though.
