It might not be a popular recommendation, but Final Fantasy I is a classic and definitely worth a play if you haven't already. You can get DoS for GBA or Origins for PSX.
Beat X first. Then with your options I'd play FFVII. If you don't mind buying new stuff get FFIX, FFXII, FFIII, or any of the FF Advance games (Dawn Of Souls (I and II), IV and V are out now, VI coming later).
Yeah, it would be cool to play it on gba. How about the one on ds? (III I guess) is it nice? anyway, I'll look for other games after VII and VIII.

I say if your going to try the originals (Like everyone should) you should play FFIX, before them, so when your characters can't do 9 billion damage it doesn't come as a huge shock or the fact that you can't just tap the X button, and you need to level up.
I'd suggest completing X before moving on to another one of the games. Next I'd play VII, because personally I'm not a big fan of VIII!
Go with VIII defionitely imo.
