I would say MGS3: Subsistence but I feel this should be about original properties not remakes and special editions.
It's a toss up between Suikoden V and FFXII but I'm going to give it to XII cause it restored some faith in the series for me after the disappointing FFX. I also don't play MMOs so FFXI doesn't really exist to me. Therefore, not counting the rereleases of older FF games, I haven't played a good FF since IX.
FFXII gave me everything I was looking for in the series for awhile. A living breathing world, an open ended and strategy based combat and game system. A completely likable cast, a simple but engaging storyline that isn't boggled down by a sappy love story or pointless plot-twist that only serve to make you believe the game is deeper than it really is.
An honorable mention goes to Xenosaga Episode III. The game itself was beautiful and it really redeemed the series for me. Unfortunately, it's difficult to judge this game alone since it's part of a overall story so I'm sad to say I'm happy Xenosaga is finally over and that it ended on a strong note but I would prefer for it to remain over...
KHII wins my reward for biggest disappointment of 2006. Gameplaywise it's flawless, but I feel they really dropped the ball on the story and characters. Alot of suspense and build-up only to lead to one anti-climatic moment after another. To be honest, it killed my interest in the series and ruined it's one chance to step out of the shadow of Disney and Squenix.
I need to finish Shadow of the Colossus, otherwise I would have mentioned it. I also will be picking up Zelda pretty shortly as well. So I may have to update.
