Cloud's got something Barret doesn't - Jenova cells. And mako energy therapy.
Two things, then...

Cloud's sword might be lighter than it seems. If it was made of steel, then it'd be unfeasibly heavy. However, it's clearly not steel since it can slice or shatter reinforced concrete without taking a ding.

The Lifestream's made of energy, or something plasma-ish, I'd wager. Tifa and Cloud both manage to surivive in it. Besides, the FFVII world appears to contain some fluids that can be breathed safely - like whatever's in those canisters that Cloud, Zack and Vincent were trapped inside during Shinra's experiments.
