It was revealed earlier this week that the much anticipated game, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII would be made available for digital download. The game's director Motomu Toriyama confirmed it during an interview with Final Fantasy Network.
You may be wondering why this is even newsworthy - most games are made available to download, right? Well actually they aren't - and the other titles in the Final Fantasy XIII series are currently unavailable to be downloaded.
There is still no 'official' release date for this game, but it has been said we can be expecting it later in the year. I wonder if they will make Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 available for digital download after the release of Lightning Returns...
It's a mystery that during a time where 'digital' is everywhere, that making games downloadable isn't a huge priority for games companies. Whilst it is gaining popularity because of online gaming platforms like Steam, it could be some time before there is a complete backlog of games ready to be downloaded at your leisure...
What are your opinions on this? Do you think more games should be made to download? Or are you someone who would much rather have the disc versions on display?
Me? I'm a fan of both. I like to download older titles (the last one was Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer, I'll have you know...) but nothing can beat having a collection of your favourite games on the shelf. Sure, I may have a copy of Final Fantasy VIII and IX that I downloaded to my PlayStation 3, but I'm not going to slinging out the disc versions anytime soon.
