Sorry, FFT. They're both undeniably strong in this category, but I prefer Xenogears overall. Maybe if FFT's plot stayed more on the political, war-based side as in the first two chapters it would be a stronger contender for me, but I think the story gets weaker later. Ironically, when I first played FFT I thought I wanted more of the high fantasy Lucavi stuff, but in retrospect most of the best plot moments of the game are completely unrelated to that stuff. Xenogears meanwhile has some issues with the second disc, but not so much in terms of plot. They do cover some plot points maybe a little too briefly in the second disc, but what's there is great.
God, this is probably the hardest choice for me yet. One is a story that influenced me more than probably any other video game, while the other is just an incredibly mature and compelling narrative that just doesn’t happen in video games.
I think I’m gonna need to go with FFT this time, just because its rarer. But Xenogears is probably closer to my heart so I still won’t even be mad if it wins.
Really difficult choice, but I think I am going to go with FFT as it is the game I remember the most of, which is no mean feat as I had a stroke in January.
This one hurts me a little bit because while I love Tactoc's story, I really do feel there is nothing quite like Xenogears' plot.

Both have great plots, but I agree with Fynn that FFT has the 'rarer' more mature story that you don't see a ton of in RPGs. Xenogears' plot is great and unique but does feel in the ballpark of what you would get in your standard JRPG or anime.
