For the gambit system. For getting rid of random encounters. For some really great characters. For more political machinations and shades-of-grey characters.
I will second the random encounters deal. I also loved the gambit system and different way to approach the story. This is one of the two FF games I have only played once and I really need to remedy that one day.
For giving me the best, most fun and "real" world in FF history. Exploring Ivalice, I felt like I honestly was on some great, epic quest. I could spend hours just hiking around the planet because it was beautiful and really addictive.
For "I am Captain Basch!"
I have one more! Cheating, I know
For Fran and Balthier! My greatest OTP!
For fantastic voice acting!

I thought the "World Map" was awesome, little things like a change of season at giza plains(?) was very clever. FF12 was the way forward, they went backwards after 12.

Gambits. Licence board. No random encounters.
And, of course, my first game character crushes: Fran and Balthier
I got kind of a crush on Larsa. Then I found out he was a DUDE.
(SPOILER)Still the cutest thing in the game.
For everything. This is still my favorite game. Not just Final Fantasy, but overall.
I LOVE the battle system.
I LOVE the gambits (even if they could be fixed a bit).
I LOVE the License board (even if it could be fixed a bit).
I LOVE the characters (bad sense of style by Vaan & Basch aside).
I LOVE the story.
I LOVE the different types of characters.
Finally, I love the Cactoids & the Mandragora monsters.
PS: Admin, could we somehow get a dancing cactoid post icon/smilie?
There is plenty to like about this game. My personal favorites:
-An actually good story: mature and political, with some depth
-Great characters: Ashe, Balthier, and Fran are notable highlights of the series
-World design: some of the best exploration in the whole series
-No random encounters
-Having a battle system be as hands-on or hands-free as the player wants
I'd like to thank this game in showing that a Final Fantasy can have a great whimsical atmosphere and style yet deliver a mature and in-depth story (despite its pacing issues). I also love how they are able to integrate an MMO-styled battle mechanic into a single player RPG rather well, and in line with that also offer a really awesome and distinct world to explore.
