They did say it... right after the presentation of the Tech Demo. Square-Enix's President, Youichi Wada, immediately said they have no plans for a remake. His exact words were as follows:
"Please note that what we have seen is merely a sample and we currently have no plans of releasing a remake of Final Fantasy VII."
The debate was over before it began.
They've stated that Advent Children will be released simultaneously in the United States and Japan on September 13/14 of this year.

Yup, over a year after it was originally supposed to be a released.
You know, originally it was 20 minutes long, so delays are welcome as long as they helped it grow into a fully developed story.
The only debate here exists on the side of the people who refuse to acknowledge that Square has said multiple times that they wont be remaking FFVII. Its not about a bleak outlook on our parts.
but there are also those who are hoping for an FF7 remake SOME time in the future, doesnt have to be on the ps3 (and it wont be), like me.
Just b/c you want something to happen doesn't mean it will, and I think that general saying applies here.
