I recall several like projects all getting flushed. Though, with a game company that takes systems, abuses them, and moves on to something else, effectivly property whoring, I despise the fact that they retain any intellectual rights.

To be fair an IP is as much property as a song/album or a film franchise. You wouldn't expect someone to bring out a new Robocop movie without first gaining the rights to it first (not that another Robocop movie would bring in any box office). So these unauthorised fan recreations are about on the same level. As has been proved with the PSX/GBA/DS re-releases of FF's 1-6, a company can still make money from an apparently dead IP. So it's not far to accuse any company of "property whoring", since it's just in their best interests to fully utilise their company assets. You don't have to like it, but that doesn't mean it's inherantly wrong.
