I don't know if you still need this or whatever, and this may be a spoiler, but here's what Garland says at the end of the game.
    (SPOILER)"Remember me, Garland? Your
puny lot thought it had defeated me.
But, the Four FIENDS sent me back 2000
    years into the past.

"From here I sent the Four FIENDS to
the future. The FIENDS will send me
back here, and the Time-Loop will
    go on.

"After 2000 years, I will be forgotten,
and the Time-Loop will close. I will
life forever, and you shall meet your doom!!"

At this point Garland turns into Chaos, and if you're not prepared, he will mulch your party.

I just finally beat the NES version myself. I've seen the ending countless times, but I was never the one actually playing the game... so... victory for me! yay!
The project that was awesome, has fallen apart... oh well.

try standing in front of a car without being knocked down.

garlands speech at the end is probably the best.

ill post the one from the GBA version soon.

    EDIT:

(SPOILER)???: well? do you remember me? at one time i was a knight of cornelia
    light warriors: !
???: two thousand years into the future i was slain by you...
    yes. my name is garland.
garland: you defeated me then. but the four great forces saved me by casting me back through time. once here i sent the four fiends into the future... it will be them that harness the great forces to send me safely into the past.

in two thousand years, i shall know none of this.

    *turns into chaos*

chaos: but i will be reborn here again. so even as you die, over and over, i shall always return! return to this endless circle that i have created!

    *fight starts.*

i noticed someone posted the tombstone quote. i was kinda found of the version that read here lies eddrick, instead of link. i had, and still have, more respect for zelda than dragon warriors/quest. but ofcourse, it's only logical that they changed it to link for the remakes on ps1 and game boy since square and enix had merged.
Actually it was Link in the original Famicom version. It was changed to Erdick in the US because Nintendo handled the translation.

that i never new. but it does make sence. i thought they did edrick since enix's dragon quest was the main rival for rpgs. and i thought they changed it to link for the ps1 and gba remakes, since square soft and enix merged.

here's another quote. it's from when you talk to the well.

"This is a well. You might think that there is something to it... But in fact it is just an ordinary well."

"All who live were born to die."
    - The Vampire

Actually, he went on to say a ton of less impressive trash. But this first line is gold.

"Is it you, the tinder that defeated the Fiend of the Earth?"
    - Kary

It's a really nice metaphor. You can't deny it. Again, Kary's speech fails after that, but not quite so bad as the Vampire's.

Also, it must be noted that I LIKED and never really found anything funny about Garland's line, "Light Warriors, you impertinent Fools! I Garland, shall knock you all down!"

Never before had I heard the word Impertinent, and it seems to be a very good way to insult somebody as important as a LIGHT WARRIOR. He called them impertinent fools. That's about right. It's about the opposite of what they turned out to be.
And "Knock you all down." What's funny about that. That's common terminology. If you're fighting and you get KOd or busted up or whatever, you also probably get knocked down.
It isn't funny. It isn't stupid. It isn't bad translation. It's actually very good translation. And it's a very good quote that expresses extreme confidence.
And so I'll say it again, as a great quote from Final Fantasy.

"Light Warriors! You impertinent fools! I, Garland, shall knock you all down!
    - Garland

In my GBA version, Garland says "I, Garland, will cut you down to size!"
A more accurate, but far less memorable translation.
    This is a signature.

    The greatest quote of FFI:

    "Nuke" -The Black Wizard

    Thank you..That is all.
If I were a Final Fantasy Boss, I would be named something cool like Super-Ultra-Foxtrot-Omega Weapon or something cool like that...
