Several people have completed it before. It's challenging but not too bad. The beginning of the game can be tough and tedious (especially the pirates)as you only have single target spells so you have to take out one enemy at a time and you don't have the luxury of a high defense and hit points like a fighter does. Be prepared to buy a lot of healing potions to get through battles in the early part of your adventures. Once you get your level 3 spells, a.k.a. Lit2 and Fir2, life will get a whole lot easier.

I think the last ToF is a pain for just about every solo challenge.

I never did this one, because after soloing Fighter and RM, I figured it'd be hard ut not hard enough. So I'm going to do the Thief, hardest, and be done with all my soloing.

However, i can't help but wonder if solo WM is even harder, because, seriously, cures would hardly be relevant after a while. And I'd have to kill astos with a 10g Hammer, and that's gotta be hard as a MUG.

I guess I'd have to FEAR Kary, and I've got no idea how to beat Kraken... Thor's Hammer and White Shirt? Oy.

well i have been playin it like ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!! and decided to retire for the night. but i did beat them pirates at level 15 with slep and fire/lit/ice shots. O and like 30 some potions.

would using the penninsula with the really strong monsters above Pravoka below Lefien top level up be cheating to yal?

I don't considering it cheating. I usually go there to level up when I play. I don't see how it is cheating as it doesn't really "cheat", it just helps you level faster.

It might be exploitation of a programming oversight, but in this case it's not anywhere close to cheating IMO. You have to beat the monsters regardless, and if you're beating them at lower levels when it's more difficult, that's an accomplishment in itself. I would only caution that you should be fair when describing your game if you level on the peninsula...IOW, be honest about how many times you bit the dust and had to reload.

It's one thing to say, "I beat the game with a solo black mage" and another to say "I beat the game with a solo black mage, but I should mention that I leveled up to level 25 on the peninsula and got killed about fifty times before I headed to the Marsh Cave."

15 for the pirates sounds like a little much. Aren't they practically weak against sleep?
Whatever. Just remember that using the peninsula to level is only cheating if you're also using Game Genie.
If you're using Game genie, You're also cheating if you don't go to the peninsula.

On the PSX version that would be waaay to high. Because in the PSX version sleep keeps them asleep for more than 1 round. On the NES version, sleep is useless. So yeah, 15 sounds about right for a solo black mage. I dunno what level I was at when I first beat the pirates. But I know it was pretty high.

I didn't know it only lasted one round. Wow. I'm sure I've had my characters asleep for more than one round, but I haven't tried using the sleep spell since, probably the first time I played because it was su useless.

And in the handbook, it said that sleep creamed 'em, and I've done it to them before, but I don't recall it ONLY working 1 round. But you probably know.

If it was, then it'd be removed a LONG time ago. It's still in DoS so I guess it's a feature now

It was a programming oversight. I don't know that for certain, but I'm pretty sure. I'm guessing it became "part of the game" when it became popular among the game's many fans as a place for early leveling, so they decided to keep it in later versions as one of the game's quirks (much like "spoony bard" was kept in later versions of FFIV even though it's a rather eccentric translation).

So to say that it wasn't a programming oversight because they left it in later versions, no, I'd say that's not necessarily the case. More likely IMO it was a programming oversight that they left in as a nod to the fans. So just because it's considered "official" now doesn't mean it was intended in the first place. And since I believe that in the original version that it was probably an exploit (though I think it's a grey area, and certainly don't consider it cheating), using it to level in later versions is probably exploiting the fact that they made a mistake way back when they made the original.
