Well the way you talk he ain't much good for actual combat so you might as well use him for item acquisition which will naturally get you to a high Thievery hit by the time you learn the skill. If you happen to find yourself underlevelled and would want to train your party, having Zidane mug (you know, steal while damaging) would hardly put you out that much.
And as for the MP cost, equivalent heavy hitting black magic or summons or swordplays etc cost much more than 8 MP. Not even dragons crest costs that little and that hits 9,999 just as easily (16 MP). But then I doubt you appreciate that skill either cos you need to kill dragons to power it up...
