I think FIR2/LIT2/ICE2 just barely fail to kill some of the big groups of monsters that FIR3/LIT3/ICE3 can kill in one shot. (Groups of undead and water monsters.) Killing large groups of monsters is what magic is really good for. If only to preserve your sanity as much as possible after the 97,000th random encounter.
