Yeah my dad recently got a new laptop, and Dell only sell Vista, so he had to get the business pack. He pretty much disabled any fancy stuff because it lagged his system, even with 2GB RAM, a decent onboard video card and dual core processor.

    Now that's screwed. =\

    That's probably because it's a Dell.
They'll install XP for you instead of Vista if you make a bit of noise, get in their faces, you know.

But really, Vista uses far more resources than it needs to. I always thought of XP Silver as something that grows in the garden too.

[q=Odaisé Gaelach]Wow, some of that looks incredibly like OS X. The Dock bar at the top of the screen, the way that windows minimize with sloping sides...[/q]

Most of the widgets you see aren't part of Beryl itself, but third-party programs. Some, including the various dockers are written specifically to emulate other operating systems' programs, like OSX.

The one in the video is kiba dock. It has a "physics" engine that determines the placement of the icons on the dock. It's still pretty buggy.

kiba-dock was horrendous for me. The physics engine was so bad it wasn't even slightly functional.

Yeah, I'm using AWN currently. It's nice in that it's not only a launcher, but also acts as place where windows minimize to, I guess kind of like the OSX dock. I haven't built the latest SVN, but the stable binary doesn't allow you to customize icons in the dock, so I'm stuck with some ugly default icons. Sometimes it doesn't play nice with Beryl's window preview plugin either, but I can live with it.

Needless to say, I like XP. Absolutely no problem with it. The design might be a bit too colourful, but I prefer it to Windows Classic (and I know that many people are still in love with classic). But the Vista black is just quite a bit prettier. Running XP with a Vista-like shell myself.

I don't like how they're not releasing DirectX10 for Windows XP. So I'll have to eventually upgrade to Vista next year when most newer PC games are running DirectX10. =\

    That's part of their plan~

Also, I sort of had hoped they would keep a few of the XP themes. After all, XP had several themes from the earlier versions too.

    Thank God!

I think we'll get some substitute for DX10. They can't simply force us to buy a new OS in order to play newer games. I mean, generally speaking the games support the OS which are up to 8 years old. And they definitely support the previous OS. I doubt that MS would get through with this. I mean, most laptops you get from mass-retailers today still run XP on them, are you trying to tell me that I won't be able to play a brand new game on a one year old system?

    Oh, hell no...

Windows XP to be retired in 2008

Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.

Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.

All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

Exactly! This means that the system will be completely up to date until 2008. After that they'll probably support it for good 5 years.

I've used Vista for... um... 5 minutes. Well, it's bloody hard to find anything anywhere and the drivers are still to be updated for it. However in a longterm, it's a win.

I don't think Microsoft cares that your DX10 hardware won't work natively in XP. You're expected to upgrade. Most OEMs are shipping their machines with Vista now, although there's still the option of sticking with XP (sometimes at added prices, which doesn't make any sense).
