Is it worth picking up for someone who's actually never played the Pokemon games?

Probably, the Pokemon games are very user friendly, if you can tackle the RPG mechanics on Valkyrie Profile, you will find the Pokemon games childs play.

Ive never been interested in Pokemon after Pokemon Blue, but Diamond/Pearl looks like its taking Pokemon a step further with all the online trading stuff. I dig that.
