(now often reffered to as the mini cooper classic) Though there is a point to old mini coopers, over here in the uk insurance is insanely cheap if the car is counted as a classic car which means the car just needs to be 25 years old or more. Downside 25 year old cars need lots of work to pass an mot and if you crash it and it's a write off then the payout is crap better to just swallow the big payments and high insurance and get the new mini cooper model.
