    Great thread, by the way.
Well you see, normally when something goes wrong posting, I can just hit "Back" and everything I've typed is still there. Also, I need to be able to preview like every twenty seconds.

This time though, I kept copying all my work into Notepad at set intervals. Oh, and thanks.

I'm wondering what Rinoa's full dialog says and Quistis full dialog says.
    Please post everything.
No need to picture everything, just tells us all the word it says.

Well then, I will try and post more transcribed dialogue. Since I can easily take screenshots of what seems relevant, it's not like it'll be too much effort. I guess I can already mention...

Right after the party, Quistis comes up to Squall, informing him that he must get changed and meet her in the Secret Area. She doesn't mention that it's her "last order", just another order. When you speak to her in NPC mode, one thing you can ask in English is "Last order?" to which she replies "Well I have a lot on my mind."

In French, "It's an order?" receives the response "Yes, and as a soldier you must obey!"

That was the only bit that was really different in between my last screenshot and returning to my dormroom to get changed. I still haven't done the bit where Quistis fails to have her heart to heart with Squall though.

As for Rinoa's dialogue? The surprise will begin as soon as we learn her name.

I never really thought there'd be that many differences between the English and French for some reason, which is rather naive of me. If I had anything like a decent level of understanding of German I'd attempt the same for the German language version of the game (if there is one). Thanks for posting this as I've found it to be really interesting.
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.

I do have FF7 in German (might look in vain for the ISOs for 8), but absolutely nothing changes, other than the fact that it's now full of mistakes and is horribly inconsistent... Weapon starts off as "Waffe", then inexplicably becomes "Weapon".

Anyways, I'm gonna try and have the Secret Area and the first Laguna dream done today.

it's quite natural for differences to exists between the original and a translation...

    ...ever heard of 4kids?

    keep it up!

you could also use the Scan Magic on your characters to see the differences in descriptions...

If I try to snapshot all the dialogue, it'll take way too long, plus I don't have it in me to lean over and press the screenshot button before pressing X to skip a dialogue box. Sorry d00d, but FFVIII: The Abridged Series will have to suffice.

Indeed; check out the bestiary entry on "Anacondaur".

    Anyways, onward!

    IMMA SUMMONIN MAH ONDINES

With an attack named "Andersen", probably for Hans-Christian Andersen, the author of "The Little Mermaid", the story from which Sirens originated. Apparently the heartbroken mermaid turned into seafoam and her sisters became Sirens. But I thought she was an Ondine in this one? Well whatever, let's not dwell on it, at least we're not playing the German version of FF7 here. God, that translation was horrible...

I do believe "femur" is the proper name for one's thigh bone. And we've got a T-Rex' femur right here. Score!

"Poudre Morphée", Morpheus/Morphine Powder. According to its description, a sleeping potion. Fair enough.

"Poudre Aphasie", Aphasia (Silence) Powder. According to its description, a sleeping potion. Wait, what?

Black Hole becomes Gen-X, teaching Quistis "Dégénerator". That's how the French write the sound effect for a child having a seizure... lol not really.

Mystery Fluid becomes... House? What the hell? Well if you pronounce it as though it were a French word, it roughly comes out "ooze". Still teaches "Acid".

    No "Quisty" this time

English: "It's not like everyone can get by on their own you know."
French: "You know Squall, having friends is nothing to be ashamed of."

    English: "Says who?"
    French: "Nor is it great."

Time to read my first issue of Occult Fan. Still called "Occult Fan" in French as well.

    Article:
"A mysterious death: Odell Burk of Timber was in his field when he discovered a species of monster groaning in agony in his turnip field. Burk said to the police that it happened while he was in the "Samadhi" position, a Yoga pose."

    Image caption:
    "A very peculiar death."

In the English version, it mentions him making a fence out of Steel Pipes, which I thought felt a lot more random than this. Of course, why on earth you'd feel like telling the police that you were practising your Yoga, and tell them which pose you were currently in, is way beyond me.

"F-Boards" are forbidden in Garden? Okay, I didn't even know what "T-Board" stood for in the English version. I'm lost.

"This is a demonic weapon but, in the hands of a valiant warrior, it's a fearsome weapon."

Thanks, Cid, for the "Aladore". I'm not sure what it means, but it seems like a subtle nod to Aladdin. It was a Magic Lamp in English after all.

    Oh yeah, spell levels!
    Brasier - Fire
    Brasier+ - Fira
BrasierX - Firaga (The X stands for "Max", as indicated by "Cure Max"; the reason for the abbreviation is that there are only eight characters per spell name: Reflect is called "Boomerng", omitting the "a".)

Flare_Cross suggested that I scan my party members, so here goes.

"Has a gunblade. Uses Renzokuken. Cold, silent and uncaring."

"Loves bretzels. Uses various forms of close-combat. Watch out for his legendary punches and kicks."

"A young recruit at Balamb Garden University. Her weapon is a giant nunchaku. She also casts magic."

The Big Bad Rascal has become Le Garnement, meaning pretty much the same thing.

The Queen of Cards receives a name: Ishtar. I'm not sure what the relevance is; I know she's a Babylonian goddess of love, war, sex and fertility but the name's got about fifteen million other uses in popular culture (one of which may well be more relevant) that I can't be sure. Anyone able to help with this one?
20/11/07 Update: Probably just a coincidence, but "Ishtar" is the family that guards the Pharaoh's tomb in Yu-Gi-Oh!, an anime about card games. I highly doubt the connection is intentional, just thought I'd mention it anyway.

    "Wanna go take a look?"

    "Impressive."

"It's great!" (I have not heard anyone in an English speaking country use the adjective "top" during the late 90s, even before this game came out. Apparently it was still in fashion in France...)

    "The liiiittle train..."

    "That takes me every moooorrrrning..."

    "Away from the soooorrows..."

"There's a lot of resistance members, but they're not unified."

    "Thank you, Mister I-know-everything."

Now then, it's time for The Somewhat Abridged Misadventures of Laguna and Co.!

    "Ah, it's starting again..."

The Laguna party got into a fight... and I forgot to heal after my fight with a certain G-Force trapped in the lamp! Anyways, "Limit Break" is abbreviated to "Limit B" here.

First up, "Black Blood", yet another English name gets replaced with more English (Blood Pain in the English translation)

    Kick ass!

    Desperado's name remains unchanged.

But "Massive Anchor" is now called "Titanic". Near, far, wherever you are, I believe that your HP WILL DROP LIKE BRICKS! AHAHAHA! *cough*

Laguna's weapon, the Kalachnikov. For those who don't know, that's the unabbreviated name for an AK-47 assault rifle (Avtomat Kalachnikov)

"Katal" is just as unresearched as it was in the English version. It's supposed to be "Katar" you cretins! (If you don't believe me, type "katar" into Google image search and look at what comes up)

And a Harpoon. No surprise there.

I REFUSE TO DISCLOSE THE IDENTITY OF THE SPELL LAGUNA JUST STOCKED FROM THIS MAGIC SOURCE.

"Alright, shall I buy you guys a round?"

"Actually, we can't say no to a bit of (plum wine)"
HELP: Is this a French idiom that I'm not understanding?

"Yeah! Let's get wasted, the war can wait!"

"I'm just looking to strengthen our bond with a cocktail or two..."

"The pianist you really like is at the bar."

"You gonna go for it tonight?"
In French, when referring to one's intentions to make that move on a person they like, they say what literally means "throw yourself into the water".

"Yeah, go for it, big guy!"

"Remember your promise! Come on, make a pass at her!"

    "Ah, Julia is gorgeous tonight...
    (Is he crazy or what?)"

    "Ow! I've got a cramp!"

    "It hurts!"

    "Well done, Laguna!"

"Though you didn't cut such a good figure. Hardly the 'dominant male' image."
(I don't recall the exact, exact line from the English version but as you'll all remember it went along the lines of: "Though you cut a pretty pitiful figure up there. I'd say you were a -3 on the manliness scale."

    "In your opinion!"

    So Julia turns up...

"I don't believe it, it's her! What do I do? Kiros? Ward? HELP! What do say? Oh man, she's beautiful...
    (There's no saving this guy.)"

So he gets invited to her room. Time for a pep talk with the boys...

"No problem! Finesse is my specialty!"

"We're not really talking about the same finesse, are we? Nothing you do will ever get old..."

I picked this out because I found it weird that they spoke his surname, whereas in the English version... wait, now that I think about it, they do it there too. Never mind. I'll wait until Squall and Rinoa say theirs.
"Ah, Mr. Laguna Loire?. I've been waiting for you."

After a long tirade about what Laguna wants to do with his life...

English: "Yikes, I'm talking too much again."
French: "Oh man, I'm monopolising the conversation!"

Then they receive the new orders and Laguna has to leave. Okay, so I didn't show every line there, but I got the stuff that stuck out as being a bit different... or just plain awesome, Laguna's a great comic relief character

    Back to reality!

English: "I had a dream too. It wasn't nice though."
French: "I had a dream too... Well, it was more like a nightmare."

    English: "I dreamt I was a moron."
    French: "I dreamt I was a clown."
    ^________________^

"That Laguna was funny, and so sexy too!"

"Oh, the forests sure have changed...
-But it's still full of MiniMog
    -But it's teeming with chocobos
-But the owls are still there"

"Since when do rebels take naps? Oh, I feel sick!"

"Pardon me Squall, but would you go find our princess?"

"Wake an old princess? Talk about a mission..."

    "Is something wrong?"

"This is a video game, not a fairy tale, Mr. Owl!"
Holy crap did you see that? Total breakdown of the fourth wall alert!

There are quite a few different messages that appear when you step on a save point. This is the most concise of the lot. It simply reads "Save in the menu", whereas the earlier ones said "Open the menu and select save".

    Bestiary: Chapter 3

    Raldo

Cujo - Our favourite Armadodo palette swap!

"It may appear slow because of its stone body, but it's very quick. Often appears in packs."

    Granaldo

    Lygus

"A type of insect. It's a survivor of another era. Uses its sting and its tail to attack."

    Diablos

Nosferatu - Believed to originate from the Romanian language where it was an alternate term for "Vampire". It has a whole load of other meanings too, but as I've just captioned about seventy pictures I don't feel up to it right now.

"A strange G-Force living in another dimension. Its immeasurable power will remove your HP in a single strike."

    Funguar

    Fungus

"This gigangtic mushroom uses status attacks. Beware, it's more dangerous that you'd think."

Whew! Coming next, the girl from the party (of which there were no screenshots, oddly enough! None of the dialogue was even remotely different to the English version...) reveals her identity and we kidnap President Deling!

    Squall says.
    Is he delirius or what?
    to Laguna

    Quistis says.
You know, Squall. Having friends, it isn't shamefull.

I doupt any translation has what the original text has, perhaps it's the reason Squall looks cold to anyone.
A remake should change this, doupt they'll make one now.
    Dissidia has Characters Medley.

Also, some pics are not showing up.

Delirious is used in a different context in English, so I went for "crazy" instead.

I didn't realise that "honte" was shame, not fear. I'll go correct that.

And uh, all the pictures show up for me, but then there's about seventy of them so it'll take quite some time for them to load. I just hope I don't run out of bandwidth for them, or else I might have to find some other way to host them.

Last night it stoped at Laguna, today it stoped at Squall in the train.
    (Clown Laguna)
    I'll try refresh.
Don't put too many in 1 post.

Stopped at Selphie just 1 pic more after refresh.

I've closed all other applications, few of the later ones I've got, missing holes here and there.

Odel Burk, a Timberien....he discovered some kind of monster, lying down in agony (or recumbent statue)
    A very strange death

Zone: Aye, j'ai mal ... is translated Ouch, it hurts or I'm hurting, but since he's feeling sick it would be I don't feel so good.
    Good job on that one.

We're not talking about the same finesse, are we?
So we're not talking about the same finesse.
Finesse can be a number of things... I doupt he's talking about hair fineness, or sharp blades...........
Could be raffinement Refined, Delicacy, Fineness.
    Could be Sensibility.

You, You're more of the inexhaustible kind.

And not what you said on the other line...

Selphie: That Laguna was really funny and sexy.

Edit: Nevermind, I can see all the images now

Just a hunch, but are you trying to view the page in Firefox? That's got a tendency to just "give up" if there's a lot of images on one page.

The word "finesse" gets used in English, usually to sound fancy or cultured or whatever. Also I realise I'm not translating these word-for-word, but as I've already said I'm trying to go for the way it'd normally be spoken in a conversation.

The word "intarissable" did appear in my dictionary as "inexhaustible", but there's just no way you would tell that to a person... Since "exhausted" has two meanings in English, either "tired" or having run out (if the deck is exhausted, shuffle it and start over), I went for the latter. If a person gets exhausted in the latter sense of the word, it would mean that their routine has gotten old; it could be said that Anne Robinson's role on The Weakest Link, for instance, is exhausted, but it's more than likely that we'd say it's "getting old".

So that's how I arrived at that translation. If you just translate all sentences word-for-word, you'll end up with something along the lines of the intro to Zero Wing, and nobody wants that.

"That Laguna was really funny and sexy."
I'm afraid it doesn't roll off the tongue quite so nicely for a native speaker.

I'm gonna have a new update for this later tonight... I'm just hoping that I can get it onto a new page as that last update had about seventy images and I don't wanna add even more to a single page...
