If you're confused by junctioning, you need to get smarter xD
It's better than FFX-2.
You should at least try it to see if you like it. Alot of people hate on it, but alot of people like it alot.
I think it's a very good game and the story is also very good.
About the only thing I like in FFVIII is the gameplay. I enjoy the junction system, despite the fact that it's extremely easy to abuse. The game also sports one of the better soundtracks in the series.
On the other hand, I feel that the story is lacking. Whether or not one is a fan of the game, one must admit that a majority of the cast is left fairly underdeveloped. All of the characters have potential to be very good, but their development is limited to a single event, and then they're all but abandoned in favor of the love story (which I personally found contrived).
FFVIII is one of the those love it or hate it games. It's worth a shot. Be sure to at least give it until half way through the second disc. By then you'll have a good idea of where the plot is heading, and you'll undoubtedly have a good feel for the game play.
P.S. The triple triad card game is freaking amazing.
I am sorry, but this is hilarious. The story in VIII is ridiculous at best (generally very badly done) and the gameplay system is horrendously broken (once you understand it).I think it's a very good game and the story is also very good.
You play it because these things are so bad they make it fun, not because they're good.
I will second the other guy that Triple Triad is awesome, though.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. Disagreeing with objective reality and calling it an opinion doesn't make you not wrong.
Triple Triad is a horrid game.
Though I will give it this, unlike FF IX's, the game is actually useful for your characters.
(Though I still think IX's is funner)
It's a great game with a fantastic storyline imo. Why fantastic? Because it is. Characters aren't the greatest but Squall and Seifer are still cool characters.
It's a fun game to explore in and it's still my favorite FF. Damn you people who hate it.
I'm more than willing to rip into FFVII's flaws any day of the week (it's not even around the top of my list of favourite FF's), but FFVIII has more than it's fair share of problems.
The story starts well but gets pretty bad as it goes on. There are plenty of Deus Ex Machina plot twists, combined with character development that's either cliched, makes no sense, comes out of nowhere, or even all of the above. Combine that with boring characters (with the exception of Laguna and company), and a villian that is neither interesting, nor even developed and the story can be pretty boring.
The Junction system isn't complicated either. In fact, the only thing it is is broken. It's incredibly easy to overpower your characters extremely early on, and it's always obvious just which spells you should junction, and which stats will benefit you the most. Before long, you're crushing enemies with no effort to a degree that doesn't happen in other FF's without spending a lot of time power leveling.
And then there's the soundtrack. It's still decent overall, but it isn't Uematsu's best work. Many of the themes border on being elevator music quality. Granted, some of the songs are amazing, but those are few and far between.
All that said, I still enjoyed the game overall (hard to believe, I know, considering how I just ripped into it). It's worth at least one playthrough for any FF fan anyway. Heck, I've played through multiple times myself.
Confusing is a weird I regret using to describe the junction - Abstract is more accurate. Spoonys rant says it best. What does 100 fire look like? Why can you only have 100 fire? why not 50, why not 101? What happens when you juction fire to something, how are you junctioning it? Is there a physical process involved?
With every other FF the magic/ability system at least made a little sense, and the most abstract one, FF1, is still less abstract than the bs that Junctioning is. Materia- you equip it, Theres a physical process involved in this. Espers I always imagined you wearing on a pendant around your neck or something (or just thrown in your pocket), or you have games where characters learn spells naturally based on their class, or buy scrolls which teach it to them.
But drawing magic (whatever process that entails... reaching into the enemy pockets and grabbing a handful of fire magic...?), and "junctioning" it to statistics with no physical or mental process involved?
And the whole thing about equipping GFs and later in the game finding out that they are erasing your memories? wtf? Do GFs get lodged into your brain or something?
The only thing wrong with it was the graphics out of FMV, the cliche knight saves the day storyline and some of the characters were off. For instance, Selphie, went from loving trains to wanting to blow them up. Other then that, if you like romantic RPG's with fantastic music then you should probably play it.
Some of you are broken records.
