Thread: Dernier Fantasy Huit?

This will hopefully start a new page, meaning you don't have to wait for the previous load to load. (Teehee)

So, after the girl from the party explains about meeting Cid...

"So that's why you abandoned me like a coward..."
    ^___^
Did I mention Squall has slightly more personality in this version?

    "Do you know Seifer?"
    "Unfortunately."

Then she finally remembers to introduce herself...

There's a few theories on the meaning of her name, one of which is that it's an exact transliteration (into Japanese) of a european name; "Lenore". This kinda hammers that home for me.

Linoa: "Seeds are excellent dancers, aren't they?"
Squall: "All part of our training. Approach your target without them realising they're a target, even if it means dancing with them. It's a tried and tested technique."
Linoa: "Oh! So it's just a military stategy! I though there was something serious between us..."

"Meet the love of my life. Her name is..."

    Meh, straightforward enough.

"Winzer" Deling, instead of "Vinzer". We get a little bit of presumed understanding of German as well; Linoa later has a weapon named "Walkyrie".

After noticing that the model of Deling's private carriage looks a bit crappy...

"Oh... my dog could have done a better job with its eyes shut."

"I'm in a bad mood today so clear off, Understood?"

"I'm in a bad mood, so leave me in peace. I do not wish to be disturbed. Leave at once!"

(In French, "Rompez!" is how you say "Dismissed!")
(Another note: Awww man, it's like the German FF7 again...)

"Did you want to give me a spanking?!"

"These yobs! Is this all I get to fight against? What an insult!"

When discussing what the President might intend to broadcast live via Timber's TV station...

"I present our new world-famous superstar, Selphie Tilmitt!"

    The contract:

    "Message for the Forest Owls:
The aid of these Seeds is guaranteed until the liberation of Timber.
Your liberty is our priority. Good luck to you all!

You are reminded that this agreement limits the number of agents who cannot be replaced.
    Cid Kramer, Principal of BGU"

Time to read something a bit more interesting...

    "Friend of the Beasts #1

Our dear readers of ami des bêtes, we have the latest information for all you dog lovers. In this issue, your friend will learn something to attack your enemies and help you out of those delicate situations. This power is called Angel Nordfolk. Did you know that to teach this trick to your dog, you just have to walk it a lot?"

I recall hearing of a breed of dog named "Nordfolk" but unfortunately cannot find any info on it. It means "Northern Folk" in various Germanic languages, as well as French incidentally.

    This ability parallels "Angelo Strike".

    "Friend of the Beasts #2

Have you ever wished that your dog could help you in the middle of battle? Here's your opportunity to teach it! She'll be able to steal potions from your enemies to heal your KO'd party members. This trick, which will turn your dog into a true Saint Bernard, is called Angel Shepherd.

This is the equivalent to "Angelo Recover", and you'll notice an error stating that it helps KO'd party members. Not true, sir! It heals those who are in danger once every fourteen years, not those already incapacitated.

    "Friend of the Beats #3

Scientists have discovered a connection between the moon and your dog. Did you know that your pet can use the power of the moon to protect you? This spell is called Sélénium.
It turns your allies invisible. Walk with your companion as often as you can to teach it this new trick."

"Selene" is an adjective used to describe the light of the moon, and since this parallels "Invincible Moon" it makes sense. On an vaguely related note, "Selenium" is an element used in medicine; it boosts the immune system.

    "Friend of the Beasts #4

If a monster knocks you out and you're having all the trouble in the world regaining consciousness, just ask your dog to help.
With the spell Angel Dachshund your favourite pet will find some MT-Psy to revive your allies."

Parallel to "Angelo Reverse". This is what a Dachshund looks like.

Watts gives instructions on how to get to the TV Station, but remembers that those specific trains have been out of service for about a year. I only really hit the screen capture button for this one because he doesn't mention anything about what trains to get in the English version.

English: "He was very polite and kept addressing me as 'sir'."
French: "Why was this grunt interested in that kind of information? He had a slight accent."

And last but not least, I just realised there's a G-Force I ain't summoned yet. This means "Knight of the Carpathians", a mountain range surrounding Transylvania. Now then, who had a name alluding to Transylvania again...?

    Oh yeah, Nosferatu.

    Bestiary: Chapter 4

    Fake President

    Doublure

"Deling's Doppelgänger. His attacks are special but he can't take much."

    GeroGero

    Ecorché: Flayed-alive; skinned

"A monster posing as Deling. Uses its monstrous arms and status attacks."

    Elite Soldier

    Elite-T

"An officer of the Galbadian force*. Kill him first as he can heal his allies."

*"solde" actually seems to mean "payroll" or something along those lines but I'm not too sure...
EDIT: According to Tallulah, yes it is. So "An officer in the employ of Galbadia."

Nope, it's still one page (I think most people use 50 posts per page). It loads quickly as long as I don't clear my cache.

Again, keep up the good work

I use 15 posts per page.

I have also fetched my copy of Final Fantasy VIII French, and my dictionary from London (my parents are moving soon, so I had to collect some of my things... I ended up dragging half-a-hundredweight of my stuff 200 miles North... most of it by train, thankfully! ). Anyway, I'll now be able to help you if I can. Such as by mentioning that 'a la solde' means 'in the pay of', 'in the employ of', or 'paid by', 'employed by'.

    Updating time!

Sorry about the delay here, although interest and response seems to have dropped somewhat. Here goes anyways.

The second Laguna dream is in here, and it kicks ass, especially Ward losing his voice...

Gatey the gate is called Chadan; it only gets angry if people leave without paying. I haven't looked up the name in any way, but something tells me it's named after the noise of the gate thudding into place. Probably not though, but I feel lazy :P

    English: Girl Next Door
French: Porno Countess (Cochonou literally means "piggy" in French, and appears to be a slang term for pornography going off this)

"Which drink do you want? It's 100 gil per glass."
I decided to buy the drifter a drink instead, and was presented with this list. In both English and French, these are basically the different chocobo greens from FF7. From top to bottom: Krakka, Tantal, Gysahl, Mimett, Reagen, Sylkis.

Selphie: "All right! See? It's a peace proposal! I knew it!"
Remember Selphie's absurd remark about presenting the new worldwide superstar in the previous load? Yeah, kinda fell through here. She never mentioned a peace proposal before this.

Zell: "What a load of drivel, just to introduce an ambassador!"
Yeah, the choice of dialogue here is awesome :P

Deling: "My ambassador is a magician."

    Squall: "What? A sorceress?"
No Squall, he said magician. Oh yeah, and this title will change a few more times too, but I'll get to that when it happens.

"So leave the paradise of childhood behind you, and enter the hell that is adulthood."

I forget the exact English lines, but they mention a legend of her cooking and her beauty, to which Selphie remarks "Yeah, the beauty part sure makes it sound like a legend." This time:

Girl: "Between her talents as a cook and a karateka, she'll just give him an earful."
    Selphie: "Karateka cook?"

Next stop... (So the training centre isn't safe from the translators' photoshop skillz, but this place is?) By the way, the station was called "East Academy", rather than having a French name, but I forgot to take a screenshot.

Selphie adds a new line to her "trains" song, about it taking her "far from the zinzins." I bet she spent all morning thinking that up.

Linoa: "You're such a horrible leader! Does it amuse you so much to psychologically torture your teammates? Zell just wants some reassurance..."

Squall: (Look out everyone, here comes Linoa Freud! I wonder what would happen if you took this little psychology lesson to Seifer?"

Then Squall attempts to headbutt Linoa and misses, knocking himself out on the ground. Selphie and Quistis are pretty embarrassed as they were starting to find him kinda cute until just then, so they pass out too. Not to worry, Zell's got a valid explanation.

English: "I think they went to the dream world..."
Zell: "I think they went to the parallel universe..."

Laguna: "Something seems wrong with this place..."
    -Just my imagination
    -No, it's really strange

Laguna: "I've got this awful premonition! This place is so strange..."

Laguna: "You know what they say, right? Where there's a forest, there's fire."

Kiros: "You mean where there's smoke, right?

    Ward: "Nah, it's where there's a stench, there's eggs."
(The French words "fumée" and "fumet" are pronounced exactly the same, meaning "smoke" and "scent" respectively.)

Laguna: "Great, we got two old academics. Weapons at the ready, let's move out!"

Laguna: "My grandmother always used to say..."
Kiros: "Let your grandmother rest in peace!"
Laguna: (Just you wait until I tell you what my grandfather used to say!)

Laguna: "It's a shame nobody can match my intelligence."
Ward: "You taking these Esthar cyborgs for morons or what?"

Yeah, cyborgs. They're explicitly referred to as such throughout the game; some of these same Esthar soldiers are even stated to be fully automated and totally artificial.

Laguna: "I kill two birds with one stone and you act like school-mistresses?!"
Ward: (If we could sit him in the corner...)
Kiros: (...and make him wear the dunce's cap!)

Shortly after that, Ondine learned "Clairvoyance", enabling me to find hidden Save Points and Magic Sources. Naturally this parellels "Move-Find".

English: "Don't tell me..." "...of all the worst possible..." "...predicaments?"
French: "This is becoming..." "...and major.." "...pain in the ass!"

"Soul Crush" keeps its English name.

Kiros: "I don't think we're out of the woods yet..."

Laguna: "Oh, don't be so defeatist! You'll only bring trouble upon us all! My grandmother used to say that 'it's when you talk about trouble that it comes'."

    Ward: "In that case..."

    Laguna: "In that case, what?"

Kiros: "I think I've got it..."

Ward: "I will not speak another word ever again."

Laguna: "What are you talking about?!"

Ward: "Not another word, until the very end! Bringing trouble on us is outta the question!"

Laguna: "Ward, it's just one of my grandmother's old sayings! I know how to make you speak..."

Laguna: "If I say that you're FAT, you'll say nothing?"

    Ward: "NOTHING!"

    Laguna: "Nothing?"

After Laguna tosses them over the cliff...

Laguna: "Such courage, guys! You're a real inspiration to me!"

    Laguna: "It's really hiiiiiiiiiiiggghhh!"

Yeah, so the French translators decided not to let Ward lose his voice, but rather take a vow of silence. Anyone know which it was in the Japanese version?

    Bestiary - Chapter 5

Esthar Soldier - Might be wrong, can't remember and it's late :P

    S-Borg

Esthar soldier. Uses a firearm and a sword. His attacks are noteworthy, but he's not very tough.

Esthar Soldier - Anyone to confirm this for me?

    T-Borg

"This cyborg is a replica of an Esthar soldier, but is far more powerful. Deals entirely with physical attacks."

    Elastoid

    Protesis

"Anti-personnel weapon from Esthar. Possesses an anti-gravity reactor and able to fly. Attacks with four flexible steel appendages."

    Gesper

    Elastos

"A failed weapon conceived over twenty years ago in Esthar. Attacks its allies as well as its enemies."

I never knew it would be so different

If I was like Cloud I don't think I would have taken that test.
Changed to stop Jessweeee♪ from going insane. Is that better?

    Thanks for the update.

By the way, 'zinzins' is a trivial word in French, used in the same way we would use 'whatchamacallit' or 'thingy'.

Not a lot of help I know, but I try my best.

Well either way you gotta wonder what kinda time constraint she was under when she added that line.

This cyborg is a replica of an Esthar soldier but is more powerful. Uses armed attacks only.

    attaque : attack
    armées : armed

Yeah, I was getting lazyfatigue with the translations, but the term "physical attacks" is standard RPG errata, so that's why I used it. Good that people are, as usual, trying to help out though

EDIT: Oh right, I mentioned "confirming" it. I was referring to the original English name of that enemy; I know there's two types of Esthar Soldier but can't remember if they have different names or not.

the monster's called Terminator in the Jap version but is still called Esthar Soldier in the english one... probably because of the movies Terminator...

So it's vaguely possible that they mean "Soldat-Borg" (as I believe these guys are partially human) and "Terminator-Borg" (the latter possible because of the amount of English in the French version)

I didn't realise the FF Wiki gave Japanese monster names, thought they only did character names. Should come in handy.

    O.O

ZELL HAS A DOG! I've just learned another interesting fact about one of my favorite characters n.n

"Did you want to give me a spanking?!"
I always thought he seemed constipated in that scene

Deling: "My ambassador is a magician."
...for some reason I could not stop laughing at that.

This is really interesting, thanks for posting these
