Square was leaving Nintendo regardless. That much I can agree on. But I've never heard Square deny Sony bribed them away from choosing the other CD based console
In fact at the time, Sega was pretty well up there. They seemed like a very likely choice back then. I was really surprised by Square's decision. The only alternative reason would be that the Saturn was a lot more complex to code for. Which isn't very Square-like. In the last generation or so they enjoyed the challenge of complexity simply to achieve that superior quality. So I'm left to assume money was the answer. A bribe, as you call it. From Sony.
