Is it possible that the sales are so high because of Heath dying and all just as the movie was being released and it being his last?

It's not really his last film. He has one more coming out.

It may have added something, but I think the big thing he contributed to the success of this movie was his performance, rather than his death. :P He deserves an Oscar.

    OOC:
2/16/08. Star Pulse reports that Terry Gilliam has asked Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to pay tribute to Heath Ledger by taking turns playing his role in the scenes he did not finish filming. That means four different actors will be playing one part.

08/14/2008: At the time of his death, Heath Ledger had not revised his will to include his daughter Matilda. Celeb|bitchy reports that Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell all are donating their entire salaries for this movie to Matilda.

That is just amazingly touching. I will surely give this a watch. As for the Nolan series, I guess it all depends. I think Nolan's touch will be mimicked fairly easily. He did not seem to have a b-side nuance to him at all - something that is comparable to the Wachowski Brothers.

EDIT: Nolan will surely write a third. I hope he kills of Batman just end it on an epic tone. I wonder who will play robin *sigh*

The studio should wait for Nolan. He is more than just a director for this series. He is the one with the vision. They ended this movie they way they did for a reason and he had already been in talks with his team about where they would go in the third movie. It might be 3 or 4 years but I think everyone will wait.

You don't want to rush these things and come out with something that isn't what you wanted it to be.

Oh and bipper, Nolan has said in the past that Robin has no place in this universe =D

As for this other guy...I don't really know what he has done so I can't comment. I wouldn't mind Martin Campbell though if we have to choose a replacement. That guy has a good eye for action and building up a story.

But like I said, I don't think this can be done without Nolan.

Edit: Screw Greengrass. I just looked him up. I love the bourne movies but he has not done anything else that would make me think he can handle where this Batman series is going. The Bourne movies do not focus greatly on building up story but on a fast paced story and just trying to stay ahead of the bad guys. Batman is much more than that and the action sequences in Bourne would feel out of place in Batman. Plus he has Bourne 4 coming up so he is busy as well.

I think that's certainly part of it, doubly so because his role was iconic and his acting was legendary. (Notwithstanding that he will be appearing in one more movie.) But I don't know if that's the whole thing. Batman Begins was extremely well received as well, and made (IIRC) about $400mil. That's big money, not record-breaking, but big. Following it up with something as hyped as TDK was going to be a big deal anyway. Certainly the hype was added to by Ledger's death, but I don't know that it shifted things hugely.

I think Miriel's completely right. The execs know they're on to a good thing here, and Nolan can pretty much do anything he likes with a third Batman, because they're going to get retarded money either way. They can wait until, say, 2013 for that instead of 2010.

Other than Casino Royale what has he done that's especially good? I sometimes think that Casino Royale was a fluke on his behalf as I've hated all his other movies.

I thought both Zorro and Goldeneye were good as well. He has had some misses here and there but I think he has done really good when big franchise money and production is backing him and he shouldn't be that hard to get a hold of.

I have a feeling they will offer Nolan so much money and bahookie that he'll do it even if he doesn't want to.

If he doesn't, there are a lot of good directors. In all likelihood they'd get whoever can emulate his style the best.

Martin Campbell directed The Legend of Zorro which I consider to be the worst movie I have ever seen. I hope he stays far far away.
