The short answer is no. Sorry.

It might be popular, but it's nothing that can't be posted about in threads. But that's my opinion.

Maybe we should clarify this in the announcement, but the main purpose we see in keeping the social groups function is to have "officlal" sort of groups that have some sort of relevance. Like location groups, EoFF Election Groups and groups of that nature rather than something like, "strawberry lovers group" and stuff like that.

We really want the groups to be limited in number rather than having all sorts of groups under the sun. That's what Facebook/MySpace is for. In terms of what we want to do with social groups EoFF-wise, we want to link it into forum events rather than just having it be little mini threads for tons of different topics.

I hope that clears things up a bit.

We were going to do away with it altogether. But we decided to keep it, on a limited basis, as a tool for keeping track of real groups that exist here on EoFF.

If you think that your group is somehow any different from facebook/myspace groups, I'd say that's a case of Special Snowflake syndrome.

There are groups on facebook that are useful. The Student Filmmakers groups are useful, because if you ever take a look at the posts in the group, they advertise real jobs, filming events, etc. The "I hate ugg boots" group however, is not useful.

Having regional groups would be useful. Having special groups whenever we have special events would also be useful.

Groups such as your's as well as all the other, "club" type groups are just gonna end up being nothing more than spam. I'm sure the official groups are gonna have its share of spam as well, but with a legitimate reason for a group, maybe not as much.

jussie, basically we're all grumpy and don't want anyone to have fun that we aren't having, so by relegating this to the 'official use only' bin, we can have fun in the way that we have fun drunk tanking people, making special forums, banning everyone, etc.

We also don't trust everyone on the forum to be good at decision making in a way that won't result in feelings being hurt (we CKs are allowed to hurt feelings for the good of the forum), so to be fair, no one is going to be allowed to moderate a group.

If it makes you feel any better Momiji, all but maybe one or two of the existing social groups will most likely be wiped.

Yeah Mafia has a lot of spam in it; people, myself included, have been treating it like we would user notes until the staff decided what direction they wanted to take with the groups. If it does stay and there's a problem with spam then I'll clean it up and crack some skulls if it carries on. No big.

I personally don't have a problem with what you see as spam, though, and I wouldn't have a problem with it if the Moebetics crew did it either. Maybe others disagree.

But as Mafia at EoFF is more of an event that requires organisation as opposed to "Hey look, cute Japanese things!", that's why it is more likely to stay.

I don't see how the regional groups have any significance at all, because there are meetup threads all the time regarding specific locations.

It's not just about big meetups though. It could just be for a couple of people hanging out, which happens a lot more often than large meetups do anyway.

Basically we don't want this place turning into myspace. I think 'can the same result be achieved with a thread?' is a good way to judge these.
