Flirting only works if both parties purposefully ignore the fact that flirting is occurring. Otherwise the sheer stupidity and ridiculousness of the flirting process becomes instantly apparent and the whole activity becomes a session in awkwardness. Personally I'm far too ugly to successfully flirt under most circumstances with even an ounce of success, so most of the time I never bother.
