And then the really hardcore fanboys whine about how FFVII is over-hated.
I don't even think it is necessarily the best in the series, but I do think it is very much over-hated.

I'm going to follow Kyros's lead and go game by game.
    FFI
    - Paying to save my dam game!

    FFII
    - Having to constantly worry about how every move I make in battle will affect my stats

    FFIII
    - (DS Only) having to battle half a dozen battles with a new class before you can even start evaluating it.

    FFIV
    - Having all the people who were offed come back at the end, cheapening their sacrifice.

    FFV
    - Krile's sprites

    FFVI
    - Monsters who steal from you.

    FFVII
    - Not being able to land the Highwind close to Cosmo Canyon

    FFIX
    - Bahamut being really weak. (Even with 99 Garnets)

FFX (I'll stay away from how the plot/characters as a whole aggravated me)
    - Having to recruit people to my blitzball team.

    FFT
    - Mindflay!!!!

And for the series as a whole:
Having underage characters with no combat background become amazing heroes! (I'm not so much hung up on the underage as the no combat background. If you are 18 and have been raised as a hardcore warrior since you could walk, then that is legit.)

My friend and I look at bad cosplays quite often, and I rarely see anybody cosplay as any character from FF VI [I've seen it once in a while, but it's extremely rare]. I believe this is mostly because the characters were simplistic sprites, with limited exposure to the actual character designs, and most people who played this game don't have its instruction booklet [therefor, they don't even know the full scope of what the actual character designs look like]. However, I still see FF VII and FF VIII chars quite often. Aside from FF VII and FF VIII, most common cosplays are things like FF X, Tales games, Trigun, Naruto, InuYasha, Kingdom Hearts, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, anything by CLAMP, and skanky cat girls that are actually overweight [in short, most of the generic/typical games/anime out there].

As for the FF VI fanbase, I don't really meet any people that try to cram down your throat that it's the best FF ever. For most people that played FF VI when it first came out, it usually wasn't their first RPG/FF. Most people that like it do speak well of it, but I've never seen anybody boast it as "OMG THIS THING IS THE smurfING BEST EVER" due to it being outdated in comparison to modern games graphics-wise, music-wise, and dialogue-wise, especially FF VII [this isn't modern, but it is far more than FF VI and usually ends up being compared with it].

I don't really know you that well, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but it sort of seems like this statement is trying to provoke a flame war or something. And it's true that I frown upon most things FF VII related, and that I like FF VI, however I'd hardly tote FF VI as the "best RPG ever" or whatever.

This is true from what I have seen.

Hm, I don't think this is something you should have to worry about, though. Most anybody can just casually waltz through the game without doing much training, and the skills end up taking care of themselves. When I first played through it, I found it to be quite effortless and easy to just go through the game casually.

You might be right. Truth be told, I actually do like FF VII. However, I think the mega-hate towards FF VII is stimulated by its annoying fanbase which in general seems to be quite unreasonable and lacks true foundation. Most things I see hyped about FF VII are quite generic and can not only be found in numerous RPG's out there, but also in excessive abundance. There are some reasons that motivate me to say that FF VII was in truth, actually a really good RPG. However, I almost never see these points touched on, so the irritation-level rises. I think most people that dislike FF VII are people like me, who used to like it but had it ruined for them by a certain fanbase. It only goes on to stimulate a feeling of "ugh.. god this game is so annoying to me now".

Getting Tournasol for my girlfriend's FFXII save file because she "can't be bothered".

She missed Zodiac Spear too. I hope she doesn't find out you can get that late-game too and make me do it.

I wouldn't say it's game breaking at all, just annoying to me (well, the leveling system was game breaking imo, but thats a whole different story). It's a personal thing. It stresses me out knowing every action I take is affecting my stats in different ways, and all I can think about is how ever action will affect my stats instead of just playing th game. (As you may guess, I'm not a fan of WRPGs at all.)

Are you talking about the 0.1% chance or whatever of getting it if she opened one of the bad chests? If you do that then you are the most whipped person in history.

I think some of FFXII's ridiculousness (Zodic Spear, getting the Tournesol) that you really can't possibly get without some extra info or help is probably the most annoying to me.

There is an easy way to get the Zodiac Spear in this treasure chest for each character without trying it 9999999999999 times. But I do not know how to explain in english. I'll think about it and edit it here.

I hated not having an airship for Tactics, especially during the part where you do the sidequest to get Cloud. I was also really annoyed by the fact that Cloud's powers took way too many turns to execute - what's the point?

In theory it wouldn't take more than 1000 attempts to get it. xD

I've thought up some more annoyances:

    - FFVII: Surrounded by six frogs
    - FFVIII: Losing a rare card in Triple Triad whilst trying to win another rare card. You try to win it back, but you lose another one. After losing your main hand, you consider reseting but as you try to remember the last time you saved, you're not sure whether it was 5 minutes ago or 5 hours.
    - FFIX: Going into Trance in a random encounter just before a boss fight.
    - FFX: Other than the laughing scene ... dodging lightning bolts.
    - FFX-2: Rikku's incestuous Brother.

No, there is a way to manipulate the random number generator of the game which affects the chances of what you get in the Zodiac Spear chest, and there is a method to make it so that you drastically increase your chances.

I've seen it being talked about on GameFAQs several times, though I'm not exactly good at explaining what it does, nor do I know the exact specifics of the method.

orly? Then thanks for the tip fellas. I'll look it up in a little bit.

Raistlin touched on this before, but one of the more annoying things about newer FFs is that secrets and bonuses can no longer be discovered by yourself. Take chocobo breeding in FFVII as an example, buy visiting the Chocobo Sage periodically, you can work out how to get a Gold Chocobo. But to get Zodiac Spear in FFXII, you have to not open four specific treasure chests. You don't know which chests and they just look like normal chests.

    1) That's actually a common statistical fallacy. If you fail 999 times in a row, you're no more likely to find it the 1000th time than the first time. A 1 in 1000 chance simply means that if you do it enough, it'll average out to about 1 in 1000. That would not stop you from failing 5000 times in a row to start off.

    2) That's still an assload of time and annoyance. As I said: whipped.

I have not heard of the probability manipulation trick mentioned previously, though.

Yes, I think that is the same thing I mean.

I thought that the spear was easy to get as long as you dont open certain chests or something to that effect. Its in the strategy guide if you got that.

No, that's the one that only appears if you don't open the trigger chests. In the Henne mines there is another chest that has an very low chance of having a Zodiac Spear in it in addition to the standard one.
