But.. but... he committed suicide, and this is thread discussing his death.. so.. this is a thread about suicide. I'm confused!

I don't know what is going on in this picture, but that dress is lovely. So are the packaged meats!

I've got to say, those are some of the ugliest, most ridiculous looking clothes I have ever seen. Then again, I'm not really into that stuff so maybe I just don't 'get it'.

You don't, nik, but it's not something to be bothered about. I've seen very few catwalk etc. pieces that actually looked that nice. xD

The point of them is usually something along the lines of modern art. Though not in some ty cut-a-cow-in-half way, although there are certainly a few of those.

Which ones do you think are like that? Amongst the pieces posted here I don't see anything in the least bit insubstantial.

Certainly a few of those in the biz, not in McQueens repertoire.

EDIT: HOYL CHRIST I JUST USED THE WORD REPERTOIRE.

This will be one of the few things I'm glad not to understand.

I used to not get fashion like this but then I realized, derp, it's not about making clothes to wear*, it's about making clothes that look completely badass like you are a summon like Dan said, so now I do get it and some of his stuff is great

    * It's kind of like complaining that a Monet painting doesn't serve as a technical blueprint for building a car.

As totally impractical as they look, some of these dresses are gorgeous.

There's two different kinds of fashion, avant garde and ready-to-wear. Ready-to-wear is obviously just as it sounds, clothes meant to be sold in mass production and worn by people everywhere. Avant garde fashion CAN'T be mass produced. They're individually crafted works of art. What happens when a designer creates these amazing designs is that later, they're translated to more mainstream wear.

Project Runway did a couple challenges like this, create an avant garde look, and translate it to ready-to-wear.

Alexander McQueen was so popular because he really was an incredible artist. He pushed boundaries, did things visually with clothes that other people weren't doing.

He's an absolutely amazing designer. His use of color is just breathtaking. Just struggling to learn on my sewing machine how to make small things makes my jaw drop at how people can make these things come together and work.

Haute Couture to me is about testing the limits of what a person can do with fabric, thread and needle, and beautiful color. It's not supposed to be practical to wear. It's supposed to be jaw-dropping.
