It may be technically possible, but some stuff you're going to want more of the Crystarium unlocked before you dare to take on. There's a teleporter in Oerba, the last stop in chapter 11, which I used to get back to the Steppe because I didn't want to leave (more Crystarium unlocks at the end of chapter 11, too).

I finally got to ride some Chocobos earlier, was rather fun.I also did some more missions, and then went on to Chapter 12, I loved the scene at the beginning. I'm kinda sad that I'm nearing the end though.

You can do a lot of the stuff on Pulse before moving on to Chapter 12, but some of the Mark missions, especially for the Titan's Trials are probably beyond the characters' stats or patience of most players until later.
You can definitely 5-star at least 41 of the 64 Marks (1-26, 28-38, 40, 56-58) before leaving Chapter 11 though, as well as get all the milestone awards in the Chocobo digging game, and pick up all but maybe 2 or 3 treasure spheres (a couple are being guarded by some adamantoise-types I decided not to bother with).

Just beat Barthandelos at the end of Chapter 11. Took me two tries each lasting at least 20mins, was that not the most drawn-out battle ever?
So I finally advanced to chapter 12. I've a bit past the first boss. When you hit chapter 12, it's right back to obnoxiously linear. If only there was some sort of middle ground for the chapters other than 11 between "straight narrow path" and "huge expansive area."

My first attempt on Barth Part Deux went to 13 minutes before I killed him...determined to get a five star, I replaced Fang and Hope with Sazh and Vanille and did it in 7 minutes the third time.
Haste for the entire fight makes a world of difference, as does keeping debuffs up on Barth. Seems a Saboteur can be a good replacement for a Commando while you're building the Stagger bar.
Also, after buffs and debuffs are up you can try staying in a straight damage Paradigm until one or more of your characters are about to die, then switch to a two-Medic paradigm to heal back up super fast before going back on the offensive. Actually seemed more efficient to me than trying to have one character responsible for keeping the party up for much of the fight.
Hmm I didn't think to use Sazh. I haven't been using him much, mostly just keeping him as a Super-Synergist, but then I have Hope to do that in my party already. The first time I fought him I ha been using Delta Attack - Mystic Tower - Combat Clinic (2 x Medics) which proved quite effective til he cast Doom. Then I just went crazy at him with Relentless Assault but didn't make it in time. The second time he didn't cast Doom
