You start with "The Fall of Reach", of course. It covers everything from Master Chiefs birth up to the point of Halo 1.
"The Flood" is okay, but not necessary. It covers Halo 1, but shows the stuff that happens outside of Master Chief himself.
"First Strike" is another one I highly recommend. This shows the transition between Halo 1 and 2, and is just awesome.
"Ghost of Onyx" is a read if you want to know what happened to Dr. Hasley.
The books just delve into the history of Spartans such as say, Lenny, who was the tallest, most handsome, strongest, fastest Spartan that slept with all the female Spartans and beat up all the male Spartans, (except for Master Chief who was his best friend) and was too busy defeating 100 scarabs and The Prophet of SUPERNESS during Halo 3 it was where all the action and important events happened but that doesn't matter did I mention he was the most handsome and had cornrows and blue eyes and a strong chin (written by a fat kid named Lenny and it somehow becomes official canon).
He forgot Contact: Harvest.I've not read that one myself yet though so I don't know how good it is; seeing as it covers the start of the war I would assume it's the one to read first?
I actually ordered that yesterday. I didn't even know it was out.
So "Contact: Harvest" then everything AK said?
Hmm, no, I would still recommend going with "The Fall of Reach" first, mostly because I haven't read the newest one yet and I know Reach is an awesome book.
But that might change when I read contact:harvest.

Me and Paul played some invasion today and actually won half the times we were Elites. It was pretty awesome, although it sucked that out of 5 or 6 invasion games, we were Spartans once.
Embrace change! We've just made some adjustments to the Halo: Reach Beta and introduced a new flavor of Slayer inside the Grab Bag playlist. Along with a host of under-the-hood technical type stuff that you don't need to be too concerned about, here's the list of alterations you'll definitely wanna know about:
* Grab Bag’s “SvE Slayer” pits Spartans vs. Elites
* Spartan DMR Loadout removed from Invasion Phase 1
* CTF Flag return proximity slightly increased
* Headhunter skull pickup radius increased
* Same team Stockpile flag removal and re-scoring resolved
Emphasis mine.
Well, that's a start.
