(SPOILER)Moot point here but frankly the whole "You know they let me choose" line Cortana says to Master Chief during the trilogy "You were lucky John" and "I sure know how to pick 'em" they kinda take on a new light after reach. After all, Cortana did not choose Master Chiefl, she chose Noble 6 except he chooses to stay and protect the escape of Captain Keyes and the Pillar of Autumn alone on the mass cannon since it's very much needed. This means Cortana's first choice died. Master Chief was a second or rather a forced decision not her primary choice. Now we know a lot of what Cortana tends to say is related to what is said by Dr Halsey but still talk about different stuff!

I think it was more the fact that (SPOILER)they were both lone wolf type soldiers and willing to sacrifice themselves if the job called for it.
(SPOILER)The Halo series has lost a bit of magic in this installment. The way they tried to tie things together was rash and seems wrong compared to the other series. Cortana seems to have had little if at all any choice in master chief, while she was supposed to pick him from about 100 spartans due to the fact he was both the luckiest and the best.
Then in previous canon the Pillar of Autumn was late to the fight at reach because it was on its way out, and had to turn back (and therefore survived the initial onslaught). Here it was.. for some reason there? I severely doubt one ship could muscle its way through an entire Covenant armada, Cortana or no Cortana.
Not to mention it fails to explain why MC would even be on the Pillar of Autumn. He was the leader of all of them, why wasn't he out there, fighting?
Overall I didn't care for the story, the music or the people. This would be an awful game if the gameplay wasn't this awesome (as long as you kill or leave behind any friendly AI's).

(SPOILER)Ignoring the books for a bit (which I know means ignoring something considered canon for many years) would you opinions have been different? I just think that the fact Cortana actually chose Noble 6 initially and then ends up with the chief through no option was a little retarded though I love the last stand of Noble 6 his final mission; "There'll be another time" was pretty awesome though I would have loved for the story to allow him to escape without dying so that unknown to the UNSC surviving on Reach stood 1 single spartan who lives off the land or something.
(SPOILER)Halo: Reach has certainly retconned canon for the series to a certain degree, but it shouldn't necessarily have retconned John-117's history with Cortana. Cortana and John-117 were paired together long before the events of Reach, and it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to suggest that part of the reason that Cortana must be delivered to the Pillar of Autumn is because that is where John-117 is currently located. She chose Noble 6 as her delivery boy, but that doesn't mean that she was stuck with the Master Chief by circumstance rather than choice.
What's changed is that at some point the Pillar of Autumn actually lands on Reach rather than arriving for an attempted rescue (or perhaps more likely never leaves); also it would seem that instead of Cortana choosing the location of Installation-04 is not because of data the Master Chief found on Sigma Octanus IV but rather because of the data found by Noble Team and decoded with a joint effort between Cortana and Dr. Halsey. This certainly changes some of Cortana's history with John-117, but not necessarily all of it.
The books and Halo: Legends are a secondary canon. That tends to happen when you let other people adopt stories about a given story. This kind of stuff happens all the time in universes which become as popular as the Halo franchise, so I'm not especially bothered by it. I just focus on the primary canon established in the video games; if additional story added in supplemental narrative doesn't conflict with the primary canon then great. If it conflicts, it's easy to ignore.
In related news, apparently a revised version of The Fall of Reach is due out some time in the near future. I imagine the incongruities in the canon will be rectified with the new edition.

Just throwing an FYI for you Halo newbs. Cortana has already chosen Master Chief before the events of Reach. It was for some brutal training program that was put into place because some general douche didn't like the Chief and wanted him all dead, but he and Cortana kicked it's ass fair and square.
Get with the programme, jeez...
Also, currently doing Solo Legendary. Taking about an hour per mission, though I'm only half way through. It's similar to 3 in that it just takes patience.
I should read the books.
BUT YOU ALL SHOULD ACTUALLY PLAY REACH WITH ME.
