Simple answer: they can't.

Modern science does not currently have he explanation for everything, no. But the scientific method (critical examination combined with empirical observation and testing) is the only rational way to go about figuring out those explanations.

EDIT: I was reminded of this great article on skepticism by EoFF's own Dr Unne/God. Regardless of what he said, though, he definitely saw Sasquatch.
